Dandelion & Lemon Balm

An afternoon at the walled garden. Weeding and a mini harvest of dandelions and lemon balm. The dandelions for a baking recipe that I'll be posting soon and the lemon balm for tea. (It’s one of my favourite herb teas when I need to chill out a little 💚)

Dandelion is the plant of the month over this month so keep an eye out for lots of ideas on how to use dandelion coming shortly.

Eucalyptus and Orange Bath Salts

Are you feeling the winter blues? This bath salt blend, incorporating eucalyptus, orange and Epsom salts, may be just what you need.

Bath salts are simple to make and have a range of potential benefits. This blend contains just 3 ingredients:

Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) are known for their relaxing qualities. Soothing for muscles and skin and useful for helping to calm stress.

Eucalyptus has an invigorating scent and is well known for its use in helping support the respiratory system. As well as being an aid to clearing sinuses it can also help bring mental clarity.

Orange brings a visual brightness along with energizing qualities. It’s citrus scents are both uplifting and calming.

Ingredients
1 cup of Epsom salts
1/2 cup of chopped eucalyptus leaves
Zest of 1 orange
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil (optional)
5 drops of orange essential oil (optional)
A few dried orange slices & a handful of smaller eucalyptus leaves to decorate.
Storage Jar
Muslin Cloth

Method
Place the Epsom salts in a bowl.
Add the orange zest and mix thoroughly.
Repeat with the chopped eucalyptus leaves.
Add the essential oils and mix again.
Transfer to a jar.
Add a couple of orange slices and or small sprigs of eucalyptus if wanted.

Add a cup to your bath water and soak for at least 20 minutes to appreciate their benefits.

(If preferred place the bath salts in some muslin and let the water run through them. This will save having to clear out plant material from the bath when your bathing session is over)

If you’re feeling a bit sluggish, rundown or low, a little selfcare in the form of a soak in a candlelit bath with these bath salts is definitely recommended.

New Year Herb Wand

Have you recycled your Christmas wreath yet?
Natural Christmas wreaths are often designed to be thrown on the compost heap once Christmas is over. Great for your garden and nothing wasted. I still struggle with doing it though! Taking down the Christmas decorations is rather depressing. After the busy -ness of the festive period and the house feeling super cozy and smelling wonderful the post Christmas decoration take down period can feel bland and empty.
Add in New Year’s resolutions and this time of year can feel quite pressurised too, all when the rest of nature is sleepy and hibernating!

Repurposing your wreath into herbal smoke wands may help bridge the gap between the seasons. A simple craft activity that creates something that feels both cleansing and calming — perfect for letting go of one season and welcoming the next.

How to make a herb wand/smoke stick:

Tools:
Scissors
Twine
Greenery & herbs
Heatproof dish

Method:
Take apart your wreath and cut greenery to similar lengths.
Arrange the stems so that they are all pointing in the same direction.
Gather the greenery into a tight bundle.
Tie your twine around the base, secure with a knot.
Wrap the twine around the base several times until the herbs feel secure.
Place the orange and cinnamon sticks on top of the bundle of greenery and hold in place as you criss cross the twine around the herbs.
Tie off the twine at the top of the herb bundle and snip any straggly leaves from your finished wand.

To Use:
Light the tip of the wand and allow it to smoulder. Move through your space slowly, letting the smoke drift into corners and doorways. As you do, set an intention for the year ahead — release any negative thoughts, and invite in fresh energy. (Remember to hold a heatproof dish beneath the wand to catch any falling ash)

Plant elements in this herb wand:
FIr - grounding and has protective qualities.
Eucalyptus - cleansing and brings mental clarity.
Orange - adds warmth and is uplifting.
Cinnamon - associated with happiness & prosperity.

Keeping It Simple – Home Made Peppermint Lip Scrub

A quick and easy homemade Christmas gift/stocking filler.

A lip scrub that’s good enough to eat! (It’s quite difficult not to!)

It’s easy enough to split the mix and make two versions - Peppermint and Chocolate Mint.

Ingredients
¼ cup of coconut oil
1/3 cup of caster sugar
½ teaspoon of cocoa powder
1 -2 tsp of dried mint
1-2 tsp peppermint essential oil (optional)

Tools
Red & white twine / ribbon
Scissors
Bowl
Spoon
Small jars or pots (pre sterilized)

Method
Grind the mint in a pestle and mortar. You want to eliminate any larger particles but not make it too powdery.

Stir the mint into the sugar and blend together.

Gently soften the coconut oil in a baine marie. (You don’t want it to be fully liquid or too hot as the sugar will dissolve) Add a drop or two of peppermint oil into the coconut oil if using and mix together.

Combine the coconut oil with the sugar and mint.

Take half of the mix and spoon into pre sterilized pots
Add ½ a teaspoon of cocoa powder to the remaining mixture and stir well. The mixture is likely to have solidified a little so you may need to press it into the side of the bowl with the back of a spoon to combine the ingredients.

Spoon the remaining mix into pots.

Label your pots and finish off with a bow 🎀

Orange & Rosemary Cake With Mixed Berries

An orange & rosemary cake topped with beautiful berries. A perfect bake for a Christmas centrepiece.

Fragrant, zesty & aromatic flavours that are festive but lighter than some of the more traditional Christmas desserts.

Decorated with an orange cream cheese frosting and berries that add a perfect colour pop as well as complimenting the orange & rosemary.
