NEW BLOG: Making Sense of a Late ADHD or Autism Diagnosis

Receiving a late ADHD or Autism diagnosis in adulthood can bring relief for some people.

But for many others, it raises complicated emotions:
• grief about what life might have been like if it had been recognised earlier
• shame from childhood labels like “lazy” or “disruptive”
• confusion about identity after years of masking

In this blog I explore the emotional impact of late diagnosis in adults with ADHD or Autism, including burnout, shame, and rebuilding self-understanding.

One of the most powerful moments after a late ADHD or autism diagnosis in adulthood is looking back at your past with new understanding.

Many people realise that childhood labels like:
“lazy”
“too sensitive”
“difficult”

may never have reflected the truth of their experience.

Making sense of a late ADHD or autism diagnosis often involves grief, reflection, and learning to see yourself through a different lens.

Not broken.
Not failing.

Just different — not less than.

Sometimes the hardest part of supporting someone we love is not knowing what to say.

We worry about saying the wrong thing, making it worse, or not being helpful enough.

But most of the time, people don’t need perfect words. They need to feel heard, understood, and not alone.

This is a simple guide to help take some of that pressure away.

You don’t have to fix everything.
Just being present, listening, and responding with care can make a real difference.

If you find conversations like this difficult, you’re not alone — these are skills we can all learn, one step at a time 💙 health

Have your coping strategies suddenly stopped working?

Many adults spend years pushing through difficulties without realising they may be living with undiagnosed ADHD or Autism.

Masking.
Working twice as hard.
Trying to keep up with demands that never seem to get easier.

Eventually this can lead to neurodivergent burnout, which is often mistaken for depression or “not coping”.

Later this week I’ll be sharing a blog about late ADHD and Autism diagnosis in adults, and why burnout is often the moment people begin searching for answers.

Sunday check-in 🌿

Spring is in the air, and for many people this time of year can bring a gentle lift in mood and energy.

If you can, take a moment today to step outside — even a short walk, a few minutes in the sun, or simply noticing the change in the air can help reset.

Small moments of fresh air and light can make a bigger difference than we sometimes expect.

How are you feeling this Sunday?

Self-Harm Awareness Week 💚

Self-harm is often misunderstood. It isn’t attention-seeking or weakness — for many people it’s a way of coping with feelings that feel overwhelming or hard to express.

If this is something you struggle with, you are not broken and you are not alone. Shame keeps people silent, but talking to someone safe can really help. You don’t have to be “in crisis” to deserve support.

If you’re supporting someone: you don’t need perfect words. Staying calm, listening, and not judging matters more than fixing.

Many clients worry about “doing therapy properly.” They think they need the right words, a clear story, or a starting point.

You don’t.

You can arrive and say:
“I don’t really know why I feel like this.”
“I don’t know where to begin.”
“I almost didn’t come.”

That is a completely valid place to start.

Therapy isn’t a test and you’re not expected to have it figured out beforehand.
It’s a space to go at your own pace and work things out together.

It’s also okay to contact a therapist just to ask questions first — you’re not wasting anyone’s time by checking whether support feels right for you.

I offer a free 20 minute telephone call for you to do just that.

I’ve shared a new blog today:

"Understanding Different Counselling Approaches"

Many people tell me that in their search for a counsellor there are many terms that they don't understand. This can make choosing the right support even harder.

I’ve explained the main approaches (CBT, person-centred, integrative, psychodynamic and trauma-informed) in simple, everyday language and what sessions might feel like.

There isn’t one “right” therapy.
Feeling comfortable and safe with the therapist matters just as much.

You can read it here: https://samlewistherapy.co.uk/understanding-different-counselling-approaches/

If you’d rather not comment publicly but have a question, you’re welcome to message me.

"What if I choose the wrong therapist!"

I often hear people decide to look for a counsellor, open a directory and immediately feel overwhelmed with pages and pages of counsellors. Many using terms that they don't understand.

"CBT. Person-centred. Integrative. Psychodynamic."

It can feel like you’re expected to understand therapy before you’re allowed to ask for help.

So I’ve written a short, gentle guide explaining what these actually mean in real life.

I’ll share it in a couple of days — especially for anyone who’s been unsure where to start.

It’s okay to have ordinary days.

Life doesn’t need to be productive, meaningful, or memorable every day to be worthwhile. Much of emotional wellbeing actually comes from steadiness — familiar routines, small comforts, and predictable moments.

A quiet evening, a repeated meal, a familiar programme, an early night… these things are often what help your mind settle.

Not every day has to be a milestone.
Sometimes a steady day is a good day.

If you are parenting a child with additional needs, you probably spend a lot of your time advocating, organising, supporting and holding everything together.

Many parents tell me they don’t actually have a space where they are supported.

I’m creating a small therapeutic group just for SEN parents — focused on you, not your child.

Before I finalise it, I want to make sure it reflects what parents genuinely need. I’ve created a short 5–7 minute survey to help shape it.

There is no commitment to join by completing it.

You can complete the survey here:
