Today I went back to my roots and it felt ohhhhhhhhh so good.
When I first trained in breathwork, and as a Qigong instructor, all of our training and facilitating was done as a work in silence. No music. No beats. No frequencies guiding us anywhere. No distractions. It was all about escaping the noise, the outside world with its chaos and coming inward, to the sound of the breath, the self and the connection.
Just breath, just body, just Intention and attention. That connecting to your heart beat was intense and immensely powerful.
Ideally where possible we would practise outside, letting nature be the only permitted soundtrack. The wind, the birds, the subtle rhythm of life itself. The practices were about removing distraction, not adding stimulation. Energy and intention stayed with self, not pulled outward.
Even at a retreat I attended with my instructor the work was done in silence.
Over time, for me things evolved In studios, workshops, ceremonies breathwork and Qigong I introduced more and more music, beats and frequencies. Although I loved the stillness with no sound I was mindful of music and just how powerful and freeing it can be. It can lift, soften, move, rupture, capture and release. Some bodies need rhythm to feel safe enough to let go. Some nervous systems settle more easily with something soft and silent to lean into.
And yes… I am partnered in life with a DJ. So Music is woven into our lives. So suggesting silence can feel almost rebellious in a very musical household.
This morning I guided a somatic release breathwork session with full on fresh funky beats and sound. It packed a punch. This afternoon, with a very special client, we worked very differently with nothing but the breath. Right back to my original roots. No background noise or distraction’s No forced atmosphere, instead Just presence.
I have been blown away with both.
It reminded me that this is not about music versus silence. It is infact about listening. Some days the body wants vibration and energy. Other days the nervous system wants quiet, simplicity, containment. Some days true release comes not from being led but from being left alone enough to feel.
Silence isn’t empty.
It’s full of information.
And sometimes, it’s the most powerful facilitator there is.
So don’t be lead by trends and influencers be led by your breath and your body. Self recovery comes when we choose us time and time again. You choose you.
