If you’re currently feeling a bit “down in the dumps” massage therapy could help! It can really help when you’re feeling low and can help alleviate many of the symptoms.
But how? Well, buckle in- there’s so many ways massage can help you feel brighter:
Massage reduces Cortisol (that dreaded stress hormone) which is often elevated in people experiencing stress and low mood.
It increases Serotonin and Dopamine (the good stuff) - these neurotransmitters are what gives us a sense of well-being and happiness. Some studies have shown that regular massage can increase serotonin by about 28% and dopamine by around 31%! This might be why many people report immediate reductions in anxiety symptoms after massage sessions.
Massage improves sleep quality- when you’re feeling low, or stressed the last thing you need is to be struggling to sleep on top of this but that pesky cortisol often stops you getting that much needed rest. Massage promotes relaxation, and this can help you get a better night’s sleep.
Enhances relaxation and calmness - touch stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a state of rest and recovery and can help you break out of that fight or flight feeling. Positive, non-sexual physical touch has been shown to be emotionally nurturing, especially for people who may be isolated or lonely.
Improves Body Awareness and Self-Connection- massage encourages mindfulness and a sense of being in one’s body, working as meditation for an anxious, low or preoccupied mind. Massage can help you take a break from the busy day-to-day and be truly present in the moment.
However, its important to remember that Massage is NOT a cure for depression or clinical anxiety—but it can be a great complimentary therapy used alongside other treatments like therapy or medication and effects can be temporary unless massage is part of a consistent wellness plan.
REMEMBER – if your’e struggling, there is always help available. The first step is often the hardest, reaching out.

If massage doesn’t seem like the right fit for you there are so many other ways to help tackle these symptoms of feeling low this could include:
* starting your day with some breathing exercises which are so simple but often so effective
* setting some time aside for yourself each day to do a more involved meditation (theres some brilliant free ones available on youtube)
* or prioritising some “you time” and taking up a hobby that you enjoy or have previously enjoyed.
