🤔Sometimes we ask too many questions
🌟 Try to change your questions to comments
🌈 Comments give your little one words that they can repeat without the pressure of a question
💾Save for later as a little reminder

⭐️ When you face your little one they get to see your mouth moving but they also get to see all those great facial expressions that we naturally make as we read.
🧠 Your little one will tune in and learn more from your face than the pictures in the book.
🌈 Mix it up. Reading time is special and cosy and it’s okay to keep that too. Stick to cosy bedtime cuddles and for daytime reading face your little one

🖐️ I am a Speech and Language Therapist and my 2 year old has delayed speech and language skills. So now, as a mum, I am using all the strategies that I have spent years teaching to other parents. This is one of the very first that I started with.
🙋♀️ Why does it work?
🌈 Using repetitive language can help our little ones process and store language
🧠 When a child can predict what is going to happen they feel calm. When a child is calm, they are ready to learn.
💡Think about other ways you can link predictable language with activities that your little one loves and try it at home
➡️These tips and activities are not individualised or specific to your child. If you have concerns about your little ones speech, language and communication skills contact a speech and language therapist.

Jumping is one way (of many) that our little ones might use to help get their body moving in a way that supports their sensory system and helps them to feel regulated.
When we are regulated we can learn.
If we are trying to help our little ones learn to talk, understand and communicate we have to understand what they need to feel regulated.
Linking speech therapy strategies with sensory activities is something that I discovered the power of over 10 years ago when I had the chance to work in a team with some amazing Occupational Therapists. Now, I can’t remember a time when my speech therapy programmes didn’t include movement.
Does your little one love to spin, jump or crash onto the sofa? Try to use these movements to link with the speech therapy strategies that you have been given

🌈 I am using more symbolic sounds
I know that children don't start by copying words. First they copy lot's of other things like actions, gestures and sounds.
So, I am using lot's of sounds in play and linking sounds to objects. These types of sounds are called symbolic sounds and kids (& speech therapists) love them!

🎶🎤 Why singing helps pre school speech and language development
Here are some tips for parents to try at home from a Speech and Language Therapist and Mum of a 2 year old who isn’t talking much.
⭐ Singing captures children’s attention and the tuneful intonation of songs helps children’s brains to store the words being used
🌟 It’s fast and easy to make songs up and link them to familiar routines throughout the day
⭐️ Repeat the same songs throughout the day. I am singing the same short song every time we brush our teeth, put our shoes on and wash our hands. This helps words become predictable for our children
🌟 Pause during favourite songs. I am pausing more during favourite songs to give my little one more opportunities to have a go at talking and copying those predicable words
It’s never too early to start working on speech and language skills.

🪜Building on what your child says during play is called expansion.
It’s a simple, pressure-free way to model new words and longer sentences during everyday play.
Joining your little one in play that they are already enjoying means you can support communication in moments when they are relaxed and engaged.

🌟 When Should My Child Say Each Sound? 🌟
Speech sounds develop gradually — and that’s totally normal!
However, there are a few things to look out for that would usually end in a recommendation for further assessment of speech sounds -
⚠️ Your child starts to get frustrated because his speech isn’t understood
⚠️ You are the only one who can understand your child and you find yourself being their “interpreter”
⚠️ Your child doesn’t seem to be able to follow instructions well or seems to not be listening often
⚠️ Your child’s speech doesn’t include lots of the sounds expected for their age
⚠️ Your child says words like this:
“guck” for Duck 🦆
“key” for Tea ☕️
“bak” for bat 🦇
⚠️ Your child seems aware of their mistakes and might have started to try to avoid saying certain words or sounds
Every child develops at their own pace — but early support can make a big difference! 💕
