LEJOG done! 9 days, 980miles! So far about £8000 raised for charity!

What a journey. Thank you all for the support and kind words.

It was an incredible event organised so well by and .

The route and support was second to none.

We were hammered by the weather with headwinds most days and biblical rain, sleet and hail.

As you all know I trained hard over the last 9 months for this going from 40km being my longest ride to training for this. So I was fit enough to enjoy the views and amazing scenery which was my main goal.

Don’t get me wrong it was hard as riding 110 miles every day should be. But we took it easy and basically the first couple of hours of each day are painful then your body just cracks on and gets it done. It’s mind blowing what your body can do when you just let it keep going without your head taking over!

Some of the biggest challenges for me were the cold and wet and being well prepared on the bike. But as the days went on you learnt how to better prepare and be ready for whatever Scotland could throw at us!

To ride with friends old and new, helped to keep us motivated the laughing, banter and singing when things got tough will be some of the best memories along with those beautiful places like the river wye, the lake district and Scotland where I can’t wait to visit again.

For those of you who still want to donate I will put the just giving link in my story and if your reading this later it is also in my bio.

Thanks again

James

So here is a bit of a highlight reel of some of the last few days!

Today was less hilly and should seem like an easy recovery day but reality is it’s getting tougher now.
Everything hurts when you get on the bike.
The fitness is good but the days on end just hammer the body.

The wind and rain is brutal. And although we are mainly riding together often we need a little quiet spin on our own to get out of your head. Other times we are all riding along singing in the rain to keep our spirits up!

Anyway we made it to Haydock today on to Carlisle tomorrow.

Thanks so much for all the donations we have made the initial 6k but let’s see where we can get too!

Thanks for all the support!

In 3 months time I will be cycling 980miles from lands end to John o groats with .

Raising money for and . Both charities supporting children who have lost their parents or loved ones.

When I want to remember my parents I often listen to The Eagles as they were one of their favourite bands.

So last night Amanda and I went to see their long goodbye tour. It was incredible and we had a bit too good a time and are feeling it today!

Back to training tomorrow. Lots more hard work to do before the big ride. I will do another post about how that’s all going soon.

Connor has done it again another podium.
This time it was round 3 of the Nationals at Afan forest in wales.

He had a big crash on his first race but managed to get into the finals still where he pulled it back to take the win.

Awesome effort mate. Back in the gym Monday.

Medal Monday!

Last weekend one of my clients Matt run the Isle of Wight challenge 100km around the island. He came 2nd. What an achievement.

He came to me to work on his strength and prevent getting any more injuries. He has had a lot in the past and just wants to make sure it doesn’t stop him doing what he loves which is his running.

He comes to the gym once every 4-6 weeks for PT session I give him exercises to do in between sessions and he gets the hard work done when he can around work.

We work on strength, stability, skill and mobility where needed and generally make sure that even when he is tired he can hold his form and finish his race strong. I would say we managed that nicely.

He has recovered now and we shall start training for the next one! Great job Matt.

195km of gravel riding with over 3500m elevation.

What an amazing day! Kielder Castle, Keilder water and the forest is incredible.
I was so pleased to get through it. I think we could have gone quicker but still learnt a lot of lessons to use for future big endurance or climbing days.

The start was busy, it was freezing cold and I think there were around 1k people riding. So the first 5-10km was pushing through the crowds, trying to get out so you can push the pace a bit.
It was good fun with some really rough rocky sections and lots of people getting punctures. My chain came off a few times, but we didn’t have too many mechanicals.

We missed the first food stop, then shortly after realised we forgot our sausage rolls we planned on having so had to survive the first 100km on flapjack and jelly sweets!

We had held a great pace and with more muddy technical single track coming into the second food-stop we got there with massive smiles on our faces, so we stuffed them full of food and off we went again feeling sick up the first climb, then forgot all our pain when the fun downhills started again!

I was not used to such long climbs and the back and elbows took a pounding.
The position on the bike was different to what I am used to due to constant climbs and on the downhills you tended to also take a more aero position to maintain speed. Which made the middle 3rd by far the toughest, not just as it had the biggest climbs, which were 4-7km long each, but as the body was just battered.

To beat the mental game I just kept knocking off 10km at a time in my head, small steps just one hill at a time. As soon as you got to the top you were rewarded with a downhill to lift your spirits!

Another thing that kept me going was that one of my clients kindly sponsored me £2.50 a km, so £500 for the charity, so I just had their voice in my head telling me to keep going. Continued in comments

So it’s Father’s Day today, always a tough one for me. It’s been 33 years since we lost my dad, but only in the last 3, since having Max and Octavia that I have realised that there was so much that he missed out on too, which actually I find harder to process as everyday I have new amazing experiences watching the kids grow, learn and become little talking, climbing, demolition experts!

Anyway, you may think this doesn’t relate to fitness much but they are my why.
I didn’t have my parents around and I want to make sure I am there for my kids.
They are the reason I get up early and ride, run or lift weights.
So I can run with them, climb with them, chase them and throw them across the room onto the sofa.

Nowadays, unlike in the past, I don’t just train to see how far I can push myself or see how much suffering I endure before I quit. I practice a bit of everything, keeping myself strong enough, fit enough and resilient enough. All with the goal of setting a good example to them.
This was explained to me when I was expecting little max and was terrified at the path ahead and if I would be a good dad. All I can do is my best and make sure I learn from my mistakes and set a good example. So big thanks for the advice to my good friends and mentors and
It massively helps me with my mental health too and helps me be a better dad.

So if I want to be here for a longtime I have to invest time now, which is really tough as I feel like sometimes I am taking away from being with the family. But I know that if I want to be able to run around with my grandkids when I am 75 years old I have to keep my body strong and mobile now, as if we don’t use it we lose it. And I know the healthier I stay the longer I will be able to support them.

I can give up every moment now and not look after myself but in 10 years time I could hit 50 and say I am old and my body is done.
Or I can give myself a few hours a week to keep my physical and mental health on point so at 70 I am still helping them ride bikes, move house and set what I believe to be a good example.

Mace is working on his shoulders at the moment as he is a professional boxer we need to take good care of them.

Layering Mobility, stability and then strength.

As well as our shoulder block we are working on speed and power. This boy works hard!

Then he ran an ultra marathon last weekend to raise money for charity. Guess we will be resting the legs this week!

After knowing Mace since he was young it is a pleasure to train him and I am looking forward to seeing how far he can go.

Well done buddy. Have a good rest today and tomorrow we ride. And maybe have a little beer to celebrate! Before we start our off season prep.

So this weekend was my first return to running since august. Of course me being the idiot that I am went straight in for a 10k for my first run in 6 weeks of course I would never recommend you do that. As I am always telling many of you off for ramping up your training to fast and risking injury! But I was ill so took time off and I had this booked so went for it anyway I had been cycling so knew my low level aerobic work was fine.

It went well James and I just cruised around the lovely course at New Forest Marathon] until the end of course where when I saw some friends and gave them a wave as you can see James fancied making me work so went for the sprint finish and I had to chase him down! I am sure and .vdm will tell me that I need to work on my technique! But we had a good laugh and that went out the window.

A great day out we saw lots of friends and a well done to the guys at New Forest Marathon] for a great event.
Next year I will put a team together if anyone is interested let me know.
