“BUILDING A THRIVING TEAM”

I have had the privilege recently to work with some of the team at PH Production Services Ltd.

I was asked to provide some sessions to equip them with tools and strategies to deal with stress and the high demands of working within a constantly pressured and unpredictable environment.

The course named “Building a Thriving Team” lasted for 6 weeks. The sessions were fun, interactive and practical as well as being backed up by evidence and sound reasoning.

There was a mix of group and individual activities.

Each hour long session provided important time for reflection, honest communication, a focus on recharging and well-being activities, and provided protected time away from the busy workload.

All of the participants identified that at the end of the course they had experienced a significant reduction in their levels of worry and stress.

The number of coping strategies used at the beginning of the course was minimal, but 6 weeks later each person identified at least 3 different strategies that they found helpful to reduce worry and anxious thoughts in their every day lives, both at home and at work.

Below is some of the feedback at the end of the course;

“It was nice to hear about how others feel and that they are struggling with something and in a similar boat to myself.”
“It is the quickest hour of my week!”
“It helped me take an objective look at what balance looks like.”
“I liked being taken out of my comfort zone!”

AWESOME WINTER OLYMPICS!!

I am really enjoying watching the Winter Olympics!

It amazes and inspires me to see what we humans can achieve when talent and hard work combine!

So often there is a story behind each competitor - of hardship, disappointment injury and loss… but yet this drives they on even harder to achieve their dream and reach their true potential!

So enjoy watching the athletes … be inspired … but also take a few moments to challenge yourself so that you too can reach your true potential!

🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸EAT THE FROG FIRST THING IN THE MORNING!!

A friend today had to go to hospital (again!) today - she had been putting it off as she has a long, rather traumatic history with hospitals!

Originally she had wanted to meet with a group of friends first, and then go to the ward afterwards. However she realised that it was going to help her anxiety levels to reduce further if she went to the ward sooner rather than later.

So she got up early, went to the hospital and tackled her fears!

She “ …ate her frog 🐸 first thing in the morning!”

The idea of this being: tackle the problem early in the day, and then you are free to enjoy better things afterwards.

This is one of the many strategies and tools that make up the Unshrinkable anxiety management course.

“OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE!”

Conversation today at the shop;

Me: “That jacket you are trying on looks really good! I think it really suits you! “

Lady: ” Oh thanks!… I’m not sure! … I might be a bit too old to wear this! … It’s a bit out of my comfort zone…!”

Me: “You can definitely carry off that jacket! And if it’s a bit out of your comfort zone, an even better reason to get it!”

Lady: “Okay! Thanks very much! “ she said with a huge smile 😃

Now I don’t know how often she will wear that jacket … but I do know that stepping outside of our comfort zone may feel uncomfortable in that moment, but it’s how we grow!

Pushing back those boundaries and restrictions that are in our thoughts and experiences stretch us and cause us to re- evaluate who we are.

So … I can’t help but think that today was about a lot more than just buying a new jacket!

“MY HAIRDRYER IS BROKEN!!”

My hair dryer stopped working yesterday. I was really annoyed, because I needed it to keep on working for longer . Then I realised it wasn’t broken. It had just cut out because it was overheating.  After a short while, it was safe enough for it to start working again. 

This got me thinking …

The automatic cut out actually works as a safety mechanism and is pretty smart! The hairdryer wasn’t broken, it has done too much and stopped to keep safe!

At times, our brains could benefit from using the same principle.

How often do we push through times when we should stop for a short break ?  Ignore our bodies and minds “safety signals” and keep going?

Perhaps there is more to learn from “my broken hairdryer” than I first anticipated !!

WARNING ABOUT COMPARISONS!!

If you tend to compare yourself to others, you can always find someone else that you think you are better than …in which case you feel that you are superior to them,

or someone who you view as better than you… in which case you tend to feel inferior!

Stop comparing yourself to others !! 

Instead, the best person you can learn to compete against is …

YOURSELF!

I am really looking forward to going to this session on Thursday! Having worked as an Occupational Therapist in Older People’s Mental Health for many years, I have regularly come across this.

I have many memories of visits with Social Workers carefully stepping over piles of stuff. Also I clearly remember a swarm of flies buzzing towards me after we opened a kitchen door to find worktops covered with rotting food and rubbish!

Kate is truly an inspiring lady who brings compassion, empathy and practical help to those who find themselves struggling in this area!

I can’t wait to find out what she has to share!
