It shouldn’t be surprising that each person reacts differently to the same stressful situation. After all we are all very different personalities and have different experiences.

I witnessed this recently at the airport - stuck in an eternally long queue in the Passport control area - returning back home - in a hot room full of hundreds of passengers stuck in a winding line.

✈️ ✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️✈️

As time ticked by, ( nearly an hour!) and the room got more crowded, and the departure time for a longer list of flights drew closer … people started to get increasingly stressed and irritated. Seriously worried that they were going to miss their flights.

I noticed many different reactions and responses…

- The cheeky chappy in a big group who asked to cut through the barrier, who then let a load of his mates in.
- the Mum with a special needs daughter who calmed her and protected her.
- The couple who were on a Final call warning who were desperately trying to move forward.
- The lady who had a panic attack and was sobbing uncontrollably.
- Her partner who initially was apologetic but then snappy and overwhelmed.
-The man who was clearly annoyed who did not want to engage with other passengers who had gone ahead of him in the queue.
-The passengers who repeatedly checked their watches and sighed, but felt helpless to change anything.
-The fella on his phone constantly who seemed oblivious to anything going on around him.
- The staff member who repeatedly demanded that passengers “stand behind the red line” and that he “could not help them.”
-The other staff member who looked stressed who opened up a route to other booths to help ease the congestion and chaos.

The whole room felt tense and uncomfortable, with a mounting pressure.
So many different reactions and responses!

So it does not surprise me that the most effective Anxiety Management programs or Pain Coaching courses are built around the individual!

One size definitely DOES NOT fit all!

YOU NEED TO FIND YOUR OWN WAY !

Skiing ⛷️ down the mountain has taught me a lot!
My younger self - of 25 years ago would have been mortified at how careful and cautious I was!

There was a family joke that “Mum takes a million parallel turns to get down to the bottom of the Mountain!” 🏔️

My sister 👧 , as it turns out, is a much more relaxed and comfortable skier than me! She was pretty awesome, to be honest!

I wanted to ski more like her… and perhaps more like the kids ( actually probably not that fast !!!)

However … Then I considered that I was wearing a knee support, and wasn’t feeling 100 per cent… so actually I was doing pretty well just to be doing the ski run at all!

I was also very mindful of the many middle aged ladies I had seen hobbling around in full knee braces or foot boots.
Particularly one very experienced skier who had “ done her ACL” despite being a very experienced skier!

So, I realised that I needed to learn to become comfortable to ski down
“Sarah -style” - as slow and careful as I needed - making a million turns - but just getting down safely! And that was a big enough achievement for me!

STEPS TO BECOME MORE UNSHRINKABLE!
At the top of the mountain, I had to change my mindset! To think more logically and solve the problems that I was facing! One at a time… !
So firstly- I was way too hot 🥵 ! I needed to cool down and have a few sips of cold 🥶 water, and open up my jacket.
I took a few deep breaths and slowed my heart ♥️ rate down.
I needed to know that there was an out- I could get the 🚡 back down the mountain 🏔️ if I needed to.
I watched huge numbers of skiers ⛷️ safely ski over the edge mountain ⛰️ and noticed that none of them fell to their doom!
I wasn’t sure which route we were going on, so after a family discussion we made a plan and identified a route that was less steep. ( I wasn’t the only one who was a tad nervous!)
Then we set an order to ski 🎿 down in!
The kids were going to race down really fast!
I was going to ski at much more of a “Granny pace!” So I was quite happy 😃 to be last.
We had all agreed to stick to small groups and look 👀 out or wait for each other - a kind of buddy system.

Now my brain felt in a much safer place!

I stood at the top and pushed myself forward with the ski 🎿 poles… took one last deep breath… and skied over the edge!

FEELING UNSHRINKABLE!

At the top of this snow-covered mountain, was feeling rather nervous….!
The gondola 🚠 kept going up …to 2600m which was incredibly high and long. As we kept travelling up the mountain, I was feeling a mixture of awe and wonder… but also anxiety and fear! My mind filled with doubts as to whether I was a good enough skier to do this safely! I remembered the people I had seen yesterday in knee braces and elbow slings…!
My legs felt like jelly and my stomach started to tighten.
My eyes zoomed in on the top of the slope which now seemed like a cliff edge! Every sense was on full-alert!
My heart was beating fast.
My breathing was shallow.

In that moment, I really wasn’t sure if I could ski down with my family.

Find out what happens next in Tomorrow’s post!

Interesting conversation with our son yesterday “This is boring! It is rubbish!”

“Actually son, this is hard and you are struggling, and it is much harder than you thought!
But keep preserving and you will get there! There is improvement already!”

Sometimes you need to give a different message to the frustration that you hear!

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO BE UNSHRINKABLE?

I think there are many, many reasons for this! A lot of people, myself included, can be really brave in some areas and then fearful and cautious in others.

Even the bravest, most confident people often have an area that scares or challenges them!

I spoke to a lady the other day, who said, “Put me on the stage and I can talk to a crowd of people, but I am scared of driving on the motorway.”

Often shrinking back comes from past experiences - of failure, ridicule, rejection, and fear.

Often our brain stores these “bad memories” and they get stuck. When we are in a similar situation, our brain predicts what will happen… so we get “triggered” and our nervous system goes into “full alert!”

“Unshrinkable” uses a range of tools to help to “unstick” these bad memories, and change your mindset to life’s challenges.

SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE UNSHRINKABLE?

If you look 👀 closely for people who have had “Unshrinkable” moments, you can find them every day all around you !

Let me give you some examples…

- the child who Is worried and breaks down in tears before going to school, but goes anyway, uses coping strategies and gets through the day, then realises that everything went ok.

- The middle-aged lady who stands up to her partner, and finds the confidence to tell him that she does not want him to move in with her even though he’s assumed that this will be something that will make her happy.

- The patient in hospital who is receiving mixed and confusing medical advice from different departments, who insists that she speaks to the consultant before she leaves the ward.

- the lad with dyslexia who realises that he does not need to be a perfectionist at school , but it is normal to make mistakes, put them right and learn from this.

- the teenage girl who is sick every morning and is missing school who learns that she can control her anxiety, and that things are not as bad as they seem.

- the man who worries that he cannot keep up with the demands of work, so he keeps a list of stress management tools on his phone to help him cope with the busy periods of the day.

These are all real life examples of people I have had the pleasure of working with who have experienced what it means to become “ Unshrinkable!”
