Construction Leadership Council have opened a consultation which details causes of poor mental health in construction and invites stakeholders for their views on what can be done to eliminate or reduce them. The causes are below and if you want to take part in the consultation, please use the link below.
The importance of this work is illustrated by the fact the suicide rate in UK construction is 4x the national average which is unacceptable.
Working Patterns (long work hours, limited flexibility, shift work, long distance travel, working away from home)
Operational Factors / People Management (poor planning / communication, operational demands, welfare facilities, safety compliance, limited encouragement or supportive feedback from management, conflicting relationships, bullying or harassment)
Payment / financial factors (late payments, unfavourable payments, for SMEs - unable to manage cashflow, for operative - financial insecurity when pay is late, self-employment challenges such as no sick/holiday pay, job insecurity, low financial literacy)
Barriers to Mental Health Support (low mental health literacy, high mental health stigma, low help-seeking)
