I’ve seen a lot of horses hold tension around the scapula, especially in ridden horses.
The scapula plays a huge role in your horse’s movement. It forms the top of the forelimb, and is attached to the rest of the body by a sling of muscles that suspend it against the ribcage.
This muscular sling, also known as the thoracic sling allows the shoulder blade to protract and retract, helping your horse extend forward, absorb impact, and maintain balance through the forehand.
Because the scapula relies on surrounding muscles, tension can easily build up in this area. Factors such as workload, posture, saddle fit, repetitive movement, or compensation from other tight areas can cause the shoulder blade to become restricted. When this happens, it may affect stride length, freedom through the shoulder, causing compensation through the rest of the body.
A scapula release is a soft tissue technique used to help relax the surrounding muscles and encourage the shoulder blade to move more freely. By reducing tension in this area, it can help improve mobility, comfort, and quality of movement for the horse 🤍
