Another year is nearly over, and what a year it’s been!

We can all copy and paste, or even ask good old CHATGPT to create our wild and wonderful posts but sometimes, it simply has to come from the heart.

Christmas is a time for counting our blessings and looking around at those in our lives. And while I’m an RM and a director, I am also a daughter, a wife, a mum, a mum-in-law, a nanny, a sister, an auntie, a cousin, a niece and hopefully a friend to many. These are my most important roles.
Yes, over the years they have often had to come second to my job, but truthfully, I don’t think I would change a thing.

To my team of seniors can I ever thank you enough?
You have held me up, supported my madness, and helped drive Unique to the top.

To our care staff many come and go, and it’s the nature of the job. Some love the 1-1 support, some love the runs, and some love the time we give to actually care and build relationships. Some don’t and choose to work in fast-paced environments and you know what? That’s okay.

Whatever company you’re in, whatever style of care you deliver, just do it well. Recognise and understand the needs of those we care for. Know that clients, like staff, are all different , so are their needs. And it’s okay to prefer one area of care over another. Those care needs exist everywhere, and your skills are so needed throughout the sector.

I know I speak for my team when I say we see you, we hear you, and we appreciate every hour you invest in us.

Now go and enjoy your Christmas. Spread a lot of love while you’re at work too, for I’ve no doubt it’s needed in this crazy world, now more than ever.

Love,
Debbie 🎄❤️

❤️People often tell me, “You must have so much patience to do that kind of work.” They say it with a soft voice and a little head tilt. I know they mean it as a compliment, but they’ve got it wrong.

Patience is what you use when you’re waiting in line at the supermarket and the person ahead of you is paying in pennies. Patience is what you summon when your Wi-Fi goes down. Patience is about waiting for something to end.

Support work isn’t about waiting. It’s about being, being present, being responsive, being humble enough to realise that you’re not the main character in someone else’s story.

The idea that good support work is rooted in patience sells both the worker and the person they support short. It makes it sound like we’re enduring something, like the person with a disability is a test of our goodness.

The best support workers I’ve met don’t have halos of patience hovering over their heads. They have skills. They know how to listen beyond words. They notice tiny details, a shift in tone, a glance, a pause... and they adjust. They can turn frustration into collaboration. They know how to make space for someone’s independence without stepping in to “fix” everything.

Patience says, “I’ll wait for you to catch up.”
Good support says, “I’ll walk with you, at your pace, and learn the rhythm of your stride.”

So no, disability support work doesn’t take patience. It takes respect. It takes skill.

And it’s all year round 👇

🎄 This Christmas, the best gift you can give is your time.

For many older people, the festive season can be much quieter than it once was. Family may live far away, routines change, and the long winter days can feel isolating. Even with decorations up and cards on the mantelpiece, loneliness can still be there.

What makes the biggest difference is often the simplest things. Taking time to visit. Picking up the phone just to chat. Sitting down for a cup of tea without rushing. Listening to stories that have been told before, because being heard still matters.

If you have an older loved one, neighbour or friend, reaching out this Christmas could mean more to them than you realise. And if you’re supporting someone and finding it difficult, please know that help is available. No one should have to carry the responsibility of care alone.

From all of us at Unique Home Care NI, let’s look out for one another this Christmas and help make the season feel a little warmer for everyone. 💙

“I love making a difference to peoples lives, especially when we work with challenging behaviours. It’s not your normal walk in the park care job and us as a team are a big family.” – Amy

This is the kind of honest feedback we hear from our team.🦋💜
Care isn’t always easy, but when you work with people who support each other and you can actually see the impact you’re making, it’s a job that sticks with you.

We’re sharing Amy’s words because they sum up what working in homecare is really like — real people, real teamwork, and work that matters.

And if you’re someone who values that too, we’ve updated our Careers Page with all current positions!
