Think you have to go into hospital for a safe birth? That’s not true.

Many people give birth safely:
At home
In a midwife led unit
In a hospital obstetric unit

Serious adverse outcomes are rare across all settings, and homeor midwife led births often involve fewer interventions like caesareans, assisted births, or epidurals.

Transfers to hospital do happen, usually for non emergency reasons (pain relief, stitches, or baby checks) and are less common for people who’ve already had a baby.

“Risk” is personal. Labels don’t tell the whole story. What matters most is being supported, informed, and respected in your choices.

*This is based on the Birthplace in England study, the largest UK research on planned birth settings (published in 2011, so could do with updating..!).*

Your birth. Your choice. Your body. Your support.

Birth doesn’t just affect the person giving birth.

Charlie was a first time mum.
Her partner was carrying trauma from a previous birth.

Together, we prepared. Not just for labour, but for the emotions that came with it.

With the right support, Charlie stepped into her power and had the physiological vaginal birth she wanted, tuning into her body and following her natural urges.

And just as importantly, her partner was supported too. So he could stay present, calm, and connected during the birth.

When both parents are supported, birth can be transformative. Physiological birth story shared by a Norfolk doula supporting both parents during labour.

7 years ago today.
My 2nd ever public breastfeed (the first was a few days earlier, out for lunch with friends).
It was the very start of a new year. And I had no idea then how much that year, and this journey, would change my life.
This came after weeks of pumping, tears, doubt, and sheer bloody perseverance.
After being told to give formula in a bottle at 2 days old (and doing exactly what I was told, because I didn’t know any different) my baby was feeding from bottles of expressed milk instead of from me. I started pumping straight away and, thankfully, managed to bring my supply up to more than enough for her.

By this point, she was 3 months old.
But getting her back to the breast wasn’t easy.
It was exhausting. Emotional. And honestly heartbreaking at times.
Eventually, we got there.
And this moment meant everything.

That experience is the reason I’m so passionate about families having the right knowledge and support going into their breastfeeding journeys. So no one has to go through the s**t show I did, feeling lost and like they’ve failed, when they absolutely haven’t 💖

Meeting a newborn baby at Christmas can be special. And overwhelming.

Some parents are happy for their baby to be cuddled.
Others don’t want their newborn passed around, especially in the early days.

This is completely normal. Protective, primal instincts after birth are strong, and being asked (without pressure) can reduce anxiety, protect feeding, and support both baby and mum 🤍

If you’re visiting a new baby this Christmas, asking first (and respecting the answer!) is one of the kindest things you can do.

Save & share as a gentle reminder 🎄👶🏻
