🌸 Understanding Contraception During Perimenopause🌸

If you are in your 40s or early 50s and starting to notice changes in your menstrual cycle, you may have wondered whether contraception is still necessary?

A recent article by Dr Wendy Knoops, Clinical Lead at TMC Scotland, titled “Contraception During Perimenopause: Do You Still Need It?” offers valuable clarity on a topic many women are unsure about.

Dr Knoops explains that:
🔹 Pregnancy is still possible during perimenopause, even with irregular cycles.
🔹 Contraception at this stage can provide benefits beyond pregnancy prevention, including support with heavy bleeding, symptom management, and hormonal stability.
🔹 There are several contraceptive options suitable for women in midlife, including combined hormonal methods, progestogen-only options, and non-hormonal methods such as the copper IUD.
🔹 Guidance on when to safely stop contraception differs depending on your age, overall health, and whether your periods have fully stopped.

What stood out most is how important it is to have a personalised approach. Perimenopause is a transitional phase, and your contraceptive needs may shift as your hormones change. Speaking with a healthcare professional can help ensure you’re protected, supported, and making informed choices.

If you’re navigating perimenopause and feeling unsure about contraception, this article is genuinely worth a read. Empowering yourself with knowledge is one of the most impactful steps you can take for your long-term health and wellbeing.

At The Menopause Consortium, we are seeing a growing number of women struggling with PMDD, not only those in peri-menopause, but many non menopausal women too. The impact on mental and physical health can be devastating, and far too many are still told it’s “just PMS.”

If you or someone you know experiences intense mood changes, anxiety, depression, or exhaustion in the lead-up to a period, this article is an important read:

PMDD is real, serious, and treatable and no one should face it alone.

We encourage anyone who recognises these symptoms to reach out for professional support. You can find specialist clinicians on the National Association of Premenstrual Syndromes (NAPS) website (www.pms.org.uk) , and all our specialists at TMC are proud members of NAPS.

Help is available, and early support can make a life-changing difference. 💛
Please share to raise awareness. 🥰

🌸 Your Hormones and Your Mind:They are in Constant Conversation 🌸

Did you know your hormones and mental health are deeply connected?

In a new article by Liz Tatham, Systemic Psychotherapist at TMC, we explore how shifts in hormones can affect mood, memory, energy, and even how we respond to stress and how our emotional wellbeing can, in turn, influence our hormones.

👉 Read it here: https://themenopauseconsortium.com/hormones-and-mental-health-how-your-body-and-mind-work-together/
💬 Here’s what stood out to us:
✨ When hormones fluctuate, especially during perimenopause and menopause it’s normal to experience mood changes, anxiety, or low motivation.
✨ Chronic stress (hello, cortisol!) can throw your hormones further off balance.
✨ Rest, connection, and mindfulness are not “luxuries”, they are part of hormone health.

It’s time we talk openly about how the body and mind work together, especially for women navigating hormonal change.

If you’ve ever wondered why your emotions feel different during perimenopause or menopause… you’re not imagining it.
Your body and mind are on the same team 💪

💡 Our mission at TMC is to raise awareness, provide specialist insight, and help more women access the right care and support, for both body and mind.
