The Place Activity Centre on Melrose Street, which has been part of the Sherwood community for 25 years, is under treat of closure by the council. The Place has always been a ‘community’ centre, where local residents and people from further afield have been able to access Pilates and yoga classes; arts and crafts workshops; foreign language tuition; singing; drama; music and laughing groups – not to mention the art festivals; Summer and Christmas fairs and many, many others. It has always been a hub for the Sherwood community.
Without going into too much detail, the Council are maintaining that the property is commercial, not community, despite it operating as a not-for-profit community entity all these years and have hiked up the rent by £1000’s. We need, therefore, to attract more hirers to generate more income - Covid has also had an effect as many regular groups ceased to operate and currently there are only a few of us using the centre
I have been holding my Pilates classes there for 16 years and I desperately want to continue. This is not a plug for my business, I am appealing to anyone who runs a group of any kind in another location to come and check out the facilities at The Place – we must save this valuable resource.
