It’s been 5 whole months since 'Free Flowing Threads’ ended: a series of somatic dance & movement workshops I produced as part of the ART YOUR WAY award by New Art Exchange.
Being the perfectionist that I am, I had hoped it would all end smoothly and perfectly, with a peak crescendo of celebration and clarity!
But life isn’t perfect is it?
I got Covid and had to postpone my final session, leaving a long gap before we finished the series. I didn’t get the thorough closure and evaluation I was looking for. And then, I was quietly pulled away from it all back into my other work responsibilities, family responsibilities, and just surviving.
Despite participants coming to this workshop to be supported through somatic dance in the winter months, in actual fact they supported me, with their smiles, quirks, relentless positivity and, most importantly, their authenticity.
On top of this, my 79 year old mum came to every session, moving and participating in her own way. It was a blessing to be able to share my somatic work with her, and connect in a different way.
I have to shout out Olga Andrade for all the marketing wisdom and supporting me through some cringey talking-to-camera moments in the beginning (*shudders), as well as Mari Embodied Enquiry for their ongoing professional supervision.
I’ve learnt so much about myself through this group, and grown in confidence as a facilitator and educator - showing up as I am each time, and meeting the group where they are.
I truly feel somatic dance/movement is a unique, spiritual yet grounded practice unlike anything there is. What a privilege it is to connect and support others in this intimate and embodied practice.
Much love to all the Free Flowing Threads ❤️
