Physiology Flow Functional breathing for movement, health and well-being

12/04/2026

The nose is designed for breathing, with 30 functions that support it, most importantly - filtering, warming and humidifying.

The mouth is just a back up for when our need for oxygen is more than the nose can provide - when we are running very fast.

Mouth breathing leads to dysfunctional breathing, which has major impacts on health and wellbeing

Susie sloth workshops teach children in a fun way that nasal breathing is super important and part of why susie has superpowered breathing skills.

Workshops running in Oxfordshire
and available for groups and schools.

How your child breathes could be impacting more than you realise.

Fun 1 hour childrens session 12th April- 2pm
Carterton Community Centre

Many children who are feeling anxious or are being hyperactive are told to “just breathe” or "calm down"— but aren’t actually shown how, that can feel confusing rather than helpful.

Breathing expert James Nestor recently shared that around 50% of children may be mouth breathing — which can affect how calm, focused, and settled they feel in their bodies.

Modern lifestyle and environmental factors put so many obstacles in the way of us breathing the way we are designed to.

Teaching the skill of breathing gives children the tools they need for life 💚
Teaching children the science of breathing supports their health for life 💙

Nasal breathing is foundational to good functional breathing
Functional breathing is foundational to health and wellbeing

🦥 In Susie Sloth Workshops, children learn simple, playful ways to use their breathing to feel calmer, more confident, and more in control
An interactive, play-based wellbeing session for children aged 5-10 years
Functional and mindful breathing in a fun, accessible way.
Using stories, games, imagination, and creative
activities.

Children are guided to explore:

What calm feels like in their bodies
How breathing can help with big emotions
How to slow down and reset when things feel overwhelming
How breathing well supports health, energy and learning

They will develop:

Skills to help them manage big feelings and feel more confident and in control of their emotions.
Tools to improve focus and concentration for learning, and to build resilience and self awareness

Just because you can breathe without thinking about it
Doesn't mean you know how to breathe

How to breathe to support optimal health
How to breathe to support your wellbeing
👉 nervous system balance
👉 focous and attention
👉 stress and anxiety
👉 Energy and movement

Breathing is automatic
But modern life can change our automatic breathing to something that is just a little off, after around 20,000 breaths everyday, just a little off adds up

It doesnt take thinking about your breathing all of the time
It doesnt take spending large chunks of time doing breathwork
practice

It's about retraining your breathing patterns during your everyday life, so that when you're not thinking about it, your body is doing it well.
Spending just a few minutes everyday is all it takes.

The 4 weeks to better breathing course is on Tuesday's at 7:30pm at Rooted in Burford, on the following dates
14th April
21st April
12th May
19th May

When teens understand what’s happening in their body when under pressure,
they can start to work with it instead of against it.
When the pressure is on they might:
- go blank in exams
- struggle to concentrate
- feel more anxious or overwhelmed
- be emotional or irritable
- have difficulty switching off and sleeping
- breathe differently - shallow, fast, louder.

And it’s easy to assume thats just how teens behave

But often, it’s not.

It can be a sign of what’s happening in the body —
especially how the nervous system is responding to pressure.

Our breathing changes when we are under stress, its a survival mechanism -
the body gets stuck in alert mode, ready for action
Anxiety rises, the brain gets less oxygen, focus, and memory are affected.

When we understand that, things start to make a lot more sense, it gives us something practical to work with.

I’m running a small, local workshop for teens and parents in Carterton / West Oxfordshire
where I’ll be sharing simple, practical tools to support focus, calm, and performance for revision and during exams.

If this sounds like it could help your teen,
