Happy Friday! Just a little reminder for anyone experiencing blocked ears or preparing for earwax removal. Please always use an olive oil based earwax softener to begin with. This is the safest preparation to use in your delicate ear canals. The problem with water based softeners is they tend to contain overly caustic ingredients like hydrogen peroxide or sodium bicarbonate. This can sometimes cause a nasty reaction in the ear canal or worse, melt the wax sending it further into your canal, smearing it around your ear and on the surface of your ear drums… yuck! Olive oil softener tends to loosen and soften the wax without over - softening. If your pharmacist or GP attempt to prescribe or sell you a softener just check with them that it is olive oil based.

👂🏼Hi! I Hope you have all had a fabulous weekend. I see lots of customers who are convinced that they have waxy, blocked up ears and can be very disappointed when that is not the case. Commonly, this can be caused by Eustachian Tube Dysfunction (ETD), usually after having a cold or chronic sinus/mucus related condition or allergy.
👂🏼Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) occurs when the eustachian tubes—small passages connecting the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat—do not open or close properly, leading to pressure imbalance and fluid buildup in the middle ear.
👂🏼Common causes include:
🔅upper respiratory infections,
🔅allergies,
🔅sinus infections,
🔅rapid altitude changes (such as during flying or diving),
🔅and inflammation from conditions like a cold or flu.
👂🏼Symptoms often include:
🔅a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ears, 🔅muffled hearing,
🔅ear pain,
🔅popping or clicking sounds, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and
🔅sometimes mild dizziness or balance problems.
👂🏼ETD can be temporary, but chronic cases may require medical evaluation and treatment.

Happy Friday! Another very busy waxy week for me around Torbay and beyond. I just wanted to hi-light serious issues regarding cheaper hearing aids bought online or via newspaper or magazine ads. Yesterday I had to remove the silicone domes from such hearing aids from the ears of 2 individuals. One customer was aware he had lost a dome, the other was oblivious and had unwittingly created a bit of a complicated mess in his ear. Luckily I was able to help both customers, safely removing both domed without them needing to go to A&E. Whilst the domes of NHS hearing aids can become loose and lodged in a canal, they are less likely to. Some useful advice:
1.👂🏼if you think you have reduced hearing and you don’t already have hearing aids, get your ears checked and if necessary have wax removed (necessary prior to a hearing test). Get in touch with me by phone or via my website and I will arrange a home visit for you.
2.👂🏼if you are still struggling to hear book a hearing test. This can be booked with NHS audiology, or a private provider such as Specsavers. Torbay NHS audiologists and Specsavers can now do home visits if you are not able to leave your home.
3. 👂🏼Hearing aids prescribed by audiology or Specsavers are free on the NHS in Torbay and south Devon. If you choose to pay privately for hearing aids they can cost thousands of pounds.
