Today we’re talking about why someone may need a stoma following their treatment.

A stoma is an opening on your stomach area (abdomen) where a section of bowel is brought out. Poo (waste) is collected in a bag attached to the skin around your stoma.

If your surgeon is unable to re-join the ends of the bowel, or there is not enough bowel left, a stoma will be created during your surgery. This means that poo (waste) will exit the body through the stoma.

A stoma may also be created to allow the bowel to heal after surgery. It may be possible to reverse this stoma at a later date.

Your surgeon will tell you how likely you are to need a stoma. But they may not know for certain whether you’ll need a stoma until they have started your operation.
