👂🏼Ears ⁉️

Ear hygiene is important, but how many of us think about getting our ears examined and cleaned routinely?

Maintaining ear health from a young age reduces the likelihood of developing complications or problems as we age 👂🏼✅

Microsuction technique is widely regarded as the safer, faster, cleaner and more comfortable method when compared to other traditional forms of ear wax removal. Microsuction is a completely dry and sterile procedure and therefore has a much lower infection risk than any water methods.

Microsuction has overtaken the outdated ear syringing technique which involves injecting a jet of water into the ear to remove the wax, which is the traditional method of ear cleaning carried out in GP surgeries. Unlike ear syringing, microsuction can be performed on people who have a perforated eardrum, grommet, mastoid cavity or cleft palate.

❌ REMEMBER DO NOT USE COTTON BUDS IN YOUR EARS!

Using a cotton bud pushes earwax deeper into the ear. Cotton bud use may also lead to perforated ear drums, ear infections and hearing loss. In severe cases they can cause vertigo, loss of taste, and even facial paralysis.

World Hearing Day is held on 3rd March each year to raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care across the world 👂🏼

This year the theme is: Hearing Care for ALL! Screen, Rehabilitate, Communicate.

Here are some key facts:

• Globally, 1.5 billion people live with some degrees of hearing loss out of which around 430 million people require rehabilitation services for their hearing loss.

• By 2050 nearly 2.5 billion people are projected to have some degree of hearing loss.

• Hearing loss may result from genetic causes, complications at birth, certain infectious diseases, chronic ear infections, exposure to loud sounds, use of ototoxic medicines, and ageing.

• In children, almost 60% of hearing loss is due to causes such as ear infections and birth complications that can be prevented through public health measures.

• Over 1 billion young adults are at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss due to unsafe listening practices.

• Of those who could benefit with the use of a hearing aid, only 17% actually use one.

Early identification of hearing loss and ear diseases is key to effective management.

In the past month there has been an increasing number of patients seeking advice relating to dizziness and vertigo...

👂🏼Lets go through the most common cause of vertigo/dizziness from an inner ear problem ➡️ BPPV

▪️Cause: The dizziness is caused by dislodged calcium crystals (salt crystals) in the fluid of the inner ear. The calcium crystals move through the fluid of the inner ear during certain head movements of motion or dizziness (vertigo).

▪️Symptoms: A patient with BPPV frequently will awake with vertigo. This occurs when rolling over in bed or sitting up, or looking up on a shelf. It may wake the person from sleep by turning over while asleep. Movement of the head will make the dizziness worse. The vertigo will usually stop after 30-60 seconds if the head is kept still.

▪️Diagnosis: BPPV is diagnosed on the basis of the clinical history and physical examination. The diagnostic manoeuvres are commonly performed by a Specialist Audiologist or ENT Doctor. Without diagnosing which specific type of BPPV an individual has, it difficult to treat the condition effectively.

✅ Treatment: most BPPV cases can be improved with bedside repositioning exercises performed by an Audiologist. They can be done at the same time that the diagnosis is carried out. The repositioning manoeuvres have high success rates (80% of people will respond immediately) although sometimes the treatment needs to be repeated multiple times. These manoeuvres are designed to guide the crystals back to their original location in your inner ear.

‼️ If any of the above symptoms are affecting you we are here to help as always. You can book in for a vestibular/balance consultation by phone, email or online👂🏼

''Why do we have ear wax?'' Another question I frequently get asked by my patients, friends and family❓

👂🏼Lets talk a little more about ear wax…

Ear wax is a waxy substance produced in the outer third of the ear canal. Its main purpose is to protect the skin in the canal, whilst also providing some protection against foreign bodies such as bacteria, fungi, dust and insects.

Ear wax generally consists of dead skin cells which are shed in the ear canal, hair, and the secretions of wax. Some individuals create excessive amounts of wax which collects and gets impacted within the ear canal. This can cause a temporary hearing loss or symptoms such as itchiness, disorientation, ear pain or aches, tinnitus and a general feeling of fullness or pressure.

Remember... DO NOT use cotton buds or home cleaning kits to clean your ears, as this can damage your ears. Using cotton buds is likely to push the ear wax further into the ear which can risk damage to the eardrum.

Our brains still process noises when we’re asleep, and for some, even the softest sounds can cause them to wake up 😴

It’s important to our overall health and wellbeing to get plenty of sleep. Yet our sleep patterns can be affected by anything from a snoring partner to noisy neighbours or loud sounds in the street 💤

We can provide custom made sleep plugs for those who would like a good nights sleep. The sleep plugs can be used daily or as and when required👂🏼

How many of you have heard someone say something along the lines of ''he/she is SO DEAF!!!!!" I certainly have...

There are a number of ways Audiologists describe a person’s hearing loss 👂🏼 The generally accepted definitions are:

▫️Deafened – people who were born with hearing and have lost most or all of their hearing later in life.

▫️Hard of hearing – people who have lost some but not all hearing.

▫️deaf (lower case ‘d’) – people who have hearing loss; they may be born deaf or become deaf. They mix well in the hearing world and may communicate orally and may also be users of sign language.

▫️Deaf (upper case ‘D’) refers to people who are members of the Deaf community and who communicate almost exclusively with sign language.

▫️Hearing impaired – anyone with any level of hearing loss.

▫️Acquired hearing loss – people who were born with hearing but have lost some or all of their hearing.

▫️Congenital hearing loss – born with hearing loss which may become progressively worse.
