Winter brings chilly mornings, cosy nights... and unfortunately, an increase in common illnesses. But with a few simple habits, you can protect yourself and feel your best.

1. Practice good hygiene
Wash your hands thoroughly and keep tissues handy. It’s the easiest way to stop germs spreading.

2. Avoid close contact with people who are unwell
If someone’s sneezing or coughing, give them space. Prevention starts with distance.

3. Boost your vitamin D intake
Shorter days mean less sunlight, so consider supplements and make the most of any winter sunshine.

4. Keep yourself cosy
Staying warm helps your body fight off bugs that thrive in cooler temperatures.

5. Eat well and stay hydrated
Fuel your body with nutritious food and plenty of water to keep your immune system strong.

Caught a bug? Here’s how to feel better sooner:

πŸ’€ Rest so your body can heal
πŸ’§ Hydrate to support your immune system
🍯 Honey & lemon for sore throats
🌿 Eucalyptus oil to help decongest
πŸ’Š Painkillers if needed
πŸ§„ Ginger & garlic for anti-viral properties

Come with us as we take some of our care home residents living with dementia to one of our regular dementia friendly cinema days! 🎬✨

This month’s film was The Duke, shown at The Light in Huddersfield. These special screenings are designed to make cinema accessible and enjoyable for those living with dementia, with thoughtful adjustments like:
βœ… Lower sound levels
βœ… Brighter lighting
βœ… No ads or trailers
βœ… A relaxing interval halfway through

Before the film, residents enjoyed tea, coffee, and pastries which is a lovely chance to settle, socialise and connect. The goal is always to create a calm, welcoming environment where everyone can feel comfortable and have fun.

Big thanks to the amazing team at The Light for making these dementia friendly showings possible. πŸ’™

😴 Could the way you sleep be affecting your back pain issues? πŸ›Œ

You might not know it but your sleep could actually be impacting your ongoing back pain. πŸ₯±

Dr Zoe has three top tips on what you should be considering:

πŸ’™ Is your mattress firm enough to support your back?
πŸ’™ How are you lying in bed? The comfier, the better!
πŸ’™ How many pillows are you sleeping with, and could one be used to support your leg?

Make sure all three are right for you to try and ease that pain and ensure your spine is in the right position for your sleep.

Struggling with low mood as the days get shorter?

It could be Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

SAD is a type of depression linked to seasonal changes, often starting in autumn and lasting through winter.

Here are some tips to help navigate SAD:
πŸ’™ Get outside - natural light can boost your mood.
πŸ’™ Let in the light - open blinds and sit near windows.
πŸ’™ Feed your body - eat a balanced diet with plenty of nutrients.
πŸ’™ Get moving - exercise helps release feel-good chemicals.
πŸ’™ Keep a diary - track your feelings and triggers.
πŸ’™ Help your future self - plan enjoyable activities to look forward to.

If you’re feeling very low or struggling to cope, speak to a healthcare professional. You’re not alone, support is available.

1 in 6 breast cancers don’t present as a lump. Knowing the other warning signs could save a life - Here’s what to look for:

βœ… Skin changes – puckering, dimpling, rash or a texture like orange peel
βœ… New ni**le inversion – if your ni**le suddenly pulls inwards and that’s not your usual
βœ… Discharge or bleeding from the ni**le
βœ… Changes in shape or size – breasts aren’t identical, but look for new asymmetry
βœ… Persistent pain or tenderness

πŸ’–Check monthly by looking and feeling each breast. There’s no β€œright” technique - what matters is noticing what’s normal for you so you can spot changes early.

πŸŽ—οΈ It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month so please SHARE this post to help someone else recognise the signs. Early detection saves lives!
