Forgiving someone who has hurt, harmed, slighted, embarrassed, or humiliated you is never easy. In traumatic situations, it takes time and often therapy, and it is totally OK if you do not want to forgive them. Yet one of the biggest misunderstandings about forgiveness is that it is for the other person. It's not. When you find the courage to forgive someone, it is for you. Forgiveness is not about forgetting what happened, either, but it cuts the ties between you and them, and in this way, helps you to be free.

See the bigger picture of everything that happened, and, importantly, why you did what you did. So often it is the context that helps us make sense of our actions. It is OK to feel sad, blue, cross, worried, or scared. We all sometimes feel like this. Pretending you are OK and that everything is fine when deep inside you aren't OK, leads to the heavy emotions hanging around. So give yourself permission to feel them, search for meaning in why they have arisen, then consciously choose to let them go. It is easier to do this than it sounds. By processing emotions rather than ignoring them, life gets easier.
