Billie was a woman of many gifts — some fully seen, others quietly carried.

She trained as a Celebrant, guided by compassion and care, even though she was never given the opportunity to practise. Yet the heart of a Celebrant lived in her every day.

In the early 1990s, Billie wrote, produced, directed, sang, and performed a stage production in Glasgow, honouring her namesake and idol, Billie Holiday — a powerful expression of her creativity and courage.

I was deeply honoured to be asked by her family to officiate her funeral as a Black Celebrant, in the very crematorium I once visited while training — a full-circle moment I will never forget.

Your legacy lives on, Billie. 🖤

I absolutely love my job as a Celebrant. It gives me the freedom to let my families prescribe the ceremony they truly want—authentic, personal, and meaningful. ✨

As much as I enjoy the independence of being self-employed, I really value the moments when I get to connect with other celebrants, wedding planners and wedding professionals. There’s nothing like sharing ideas, talking shop and inspiring one another.

Even better when it’s at a beautiful venue like The Gardens at Polehanger. 🌿💍

Today is my Mum’s birthday. She passed away in 2001, and not a day goes by that I do not miss her.
She came from Barbados as part of the Windrush generation — strong, proud, resilient — and poured all of that into me.

There have been so many milestones in my life without her. So many moments I have wanted to pick up the phone, tell her everything — all the fabulous things that have happened — but she is not here.

I still cry. I miss my mum deeply.
But life has its own way of gifting us new chapters…

✨ My grandchild was born on her birthday.
And now, my tears are not only of sorrow, but of joy.

Grief and gratitude live side by side.
Today, I honour her legacy and celebrate the life that continues through us. ❤️🇧🇧

Today is Father’s Day across the world, and I’m sharing this picture of my Pops because I truly understand the blessing of having him in my life—especially at my big ole age.

This week, two people I know have lost their fathers—just days before Father’s Day. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a loving or present relationship with their dad. Some were raised solely by their mums, with little interaction with their fathers. Others may carry the weight of complicated relationships—full of silence, absence, or pain.
As I journey through this thing called life, I humble myself that my Pops is still here: stuck in his ways, wise with his words, and fully Bajan 🇧🇧.
So, whether your dad is still walking this earth, you’re grieving a recent loss, struggling with not having access to your own child/children or navigating the emotions that come with a complicated father-child bond—take a moment for yourself today. And if you can, celebrate the love, the lessons, or simply the growth that’s come from it all.

In many Caribbean cultures, particularly those influenced by African spiritual traditions, there is a strong belief in the presence of spirits, or “duppies.” These beliefs stem from African ancestral veneration and spiritual practices brought to the Caribbean through the transatlantic slave trade.

In some traditions, it is believed that if proper burial rites are not followed, the spirit of the deceased may not rest and could return as a ‘duppy’ to disturb the living. Covering the grave is a way to ensure the spirit remains at peace and does not wander. Additionally, some communities practice specific rituals, such as placing certain objects on the grave (like stones, bottles, or personal belongings) or holding ceremonies to help guide the spirit safely to the afterlife.

On Monday, we gathered to say a final farewell to a much-loved mum and nan. We also acknowledged that Sunday was Mother’s Day—a day that felt especially poignant as her family faced their first celebration without her.

Whilst their hearts ache in her absence, they honour her by remembering the love she gave, the laughter she shared, and the incredible mother she was.

Today, I am truly touched to have received a heartfelt thank you from the family. It is a privilege to have been part of such a meaningful farewell, and I hope that my support brought them comfort during this difficult time. My thoughts remain with them as they continue to cherish her memory.

Mothering Sunday is a day to celebrate the love, wisdom, and strength of mothers, and today, my heart is with my mum, Vashti. She may have left us in 2001, but her presence is always with me. She gave me so much—her incredible culinary skills, her passion for entertaining, and her love for fashion, shaped by her time working with Bruce Oldfield. She made weekends magical, filling our home with laughter, warmth, and the most amazing food.

Now, as a grandma myself, I truly understand the deep, unconditional love she had for my sons, Daniel and Jamil. I feel that same love for my five grandchildren, and in those moments, I feel closer to her than ever.

This Mothering Sunday, I celebrate her life, her love, and the beautiful lessons she passed down. Thank you, Mum, for everything—you are forever in my heart. 💜✨
