Please welcome our newest team member Nikolas Charalambous, a qualified osteopath. ⁣

Nik is originally from Cyprus. He was a Taekwondo athlete for over 10 years. During that time he obtained a 3rd dan black belt, whilst participating in various competitions as well.⁣

After completing high school, he did mandatory service in the Cyprus National guard for a year. Concepts of discipline, communication, team-work and leadership skills were developed⁣
He attended Swansea University where he played football every week. At my time as an amateur football player….⁣

‘I had some muscular injuries. Due to this, I decided to divert my focus on the importance of rehabilitation within Osteopathy. I joined a semi-professional team where I got relevant experience and insight on injury prevention exercises, as well as rehabilitation plans for athletes. I also completed a K-taping course, as a tool for treating athletes and individuals in general. During my final year as a student, I also worked in the NHS. There I was able to expand the scope of my practice to patients that were mainly older. Alongside relevant experience in the university clinic, my skills, clinical reasoning, and patient management were developed.’⁣

He is now available for appointments on Wednesdays at the Lower Earley Osteopaths clinic.

*Audio on* On the 12th Day of Christmas my therapist treated me......with 12 dry needles, 11 therabands, 10 goblet squats, nine therapy balls, eight massage products, seven rolls of tape, six leg extensions, five peeea-nuts, four homemade balms, three kettle bells, two foam rollers and a laser machine to help my injured knee. ⁣

Acupuncture needles have become an increasingly popular drug-free way to treat musculoskeletal pain. Frequently used as part of a pain management plan that could include exercise, stretching, massage and mobilisation to support muscle recovery and provide pin relief. ⁣

When muscles are overused or strained they can develop ‘knots’ called myofascial trigger points that can cause pain and limit mobility. This can occur when the muscle fibres undergo prolonged or overstrained contracture where they do not receive adequate blood supply, if they do not get the normal blood supply, they won’t get the oxygen and nutrients that will allow the muscle to go back to its normal resting state. The nerves around this area become sensitized, which makes the area sore or painful. ⁣

Stimulating a trigger point with a needle helps draw normal blood supply back and release the tension. The ‘prick’ sensation can also fire nerve fibers that stimulate the brain to release endorphins, the body’s nature pain relief. ⁣

Once a trigger point is located, the therapist inserts a needle through the skin into it. The therapist may twiddle the needle to try to elicit a local twitch response, a quick spasm of the muscle, which alongside a readiness around the needle, is frequently seen as a good sign that the muscle is reacting.⁣

*Audio on* On the 11th Day of Christmas my therapist treated me......with 11 therabands, 10 goblet squats, nine therapy balls, eight massage products, seven rolls of tape, six leg extensions, five peeea-nuts, four homemade balms, three kettle bells, two foam rollers and a laser machine to help my injured knee. ⁣

A Theraband, also known as a resistance band, are plastic tubes or bands that are used for low impact strength training exercises and rehabilitation.⁣

They are light weight and can travel with you, whether that’s to the office, gym or holiday (I know we wish too!). They come in a variety of strengths and lengths making them adaptable.⁣

If done correctly, the higher the amount of elastic resistance your theraband has, the harder your muscles will have to work to overcome the resistance and the stronger your muscles become.⁣

They provide muscle-building tension and help improve muscular strength, endurance and stability, which is key for injury prevention, fitness & mobility.⁣

*Audio on* On the 10th Day of Christmas my therapist treated me......with 10 goblet squats, nine therapy balls, eight massage products, seven rolls of tape, six leg extensions, five peeea-nuts, four homemade balms, three kettle bells, two foam rollers and a laser machine to help my injured knee. ⁣

Squats are functional movements that we require in everyday like (e.g sitting down and standing up from a chair) so it’s really important we train this to our full range of movement. To progress our squat we add weights such as kettlebells to allow our body to continue adapting and increase our strength. ⁣

This exercise should be completed pain free and on advice from your therapist.⁣

*Audio on* On the 9th Day of Christmas my therapist treated me......with nine therapy balls, eight massage products, seven rolls of tape, six leg extensions, five peeea-nuts, four homemade balms, three kettle bells, two foam rollers and a laser machine to help my injured knee. ⁣

Therapy balls are great to use when trying to relax a tight muscle overall or a small area of tightness within the muscle. These products can be used all over the body - we use tennis ball sized therapy balls for our large muscles like the gastrocnemius in the calf or golf ball sized therapy balls to work into our smaller muscles like our forearm muscles.⁣

*Audio on* On the 8th Day of Christmas my therapist treated me......with eight massage products, seven rolls of tape, six leg extensions, five peeea-nuts, four homemade balms, three kettle bells, two foam rollers and a laser machine to help my injured knee. ⁣

We use massage products in the clinic for our deep tissue massages, pregnancy massages and sports massages to allow us to work over and into muscles without causing friction to the skin. This enables us to work deeper into specific areas which could be causing discomfort or to provide you with a relaxing massage treatment.⁣

*Audio on* On the 7th Day of Christmas my therapist treated me......with seven rolls of tape, six leg extensions, five peeea-nuts, four homemade balms, three kettle bells, two foam rollers and a laser machine to help my injured knee. ⁣

We use kinesiology tape in the clinic to support joints and muscles without restricting their range of movement. K-tape can be used when a client has pain or swelling as it microscopically lifts the skin which increases the interstitial space, facilitates lymphatic drainage and reduces the compression being placed on our nerves. K-tape can also assist in proprioception as it gives the clients feedback on where the optimum position should be for our joints and muscles.⁣

*Audio on* On the 6th Day of Christmas my therapist treated me......with six leg extensions, five peeea-nuts, four homemade balms, three kettle bells, two foam rollers and a laser machine to help my injured knee. ⁣

Injuries to the knee can cause an inflammatory response including swelling and pain which can hinder the movements of the knee in the joint. This reduction of movement can cause the quadriceps muscles to lose strength so cannot stabilise the knee as effectively. ⁣

Leg extensions are an exercise which can help restore knee extension and strengthen the quadriceps which are responsible for this movement. ⁣

“This exercise should be completed pain free and on advice from your therapist”⁣

For further information please contact Emma on 07792580402. ⁣

*Audio on* On the 5th Day of Christmas my therapist treated me......with five peeea-nuts, four homemade balms, three kettle bells, two foam rollers and a laser machine to help my injured knee. ⁣

Peanuts are used as part of trigger point therapy which our patients can use at home. Trigger points are small bands of irritated muscle and by applying pressure to these areas can relieve pain locally and into other areas of the body. Using the peanut can alter the neural signals being sent to the trigger point, stimulate our descending pain pathway through the release of opioids and endorphins and inhibit our golgi tendon organs causing the muscles to relax.⁣

Using the peanut can reduce pain and improve range of movement and flexibility.⁣
