Some of the most common running injuries tend to involve the knee & ankle. This applies to both seasoned runners who may be training for ultra marathons or those doing couch to 5k.

Patellofemoral knee pain is one of the more prevalent conditions and is often related to biomechanical factors, such as poor gluteal control.

Common ankle problems are sprained ankles & achilles tendonopathies.

Problems usually tend to occur when exercise intensity is increased too quickly, resulting in overload of soft tissue & joint structures.

Increases in training should be progressive with sufficient recovery time allowed between training sessions.

Seek Physiotherapy advice if you sustain an injury or are struggling to progress your training due to pain.

Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of joint pain in the UK, with 5.4 million people experiencing osteoarthritis of the knee and 3.2 million affected by hip arthritis.

Evidence based Clinical guidelines advocate targeted exercises to improve strength and stability as a major factor in management for people experiencing joint pain secondary to arthritis.
Exercise, alongside weight & pain management can reduce the rate of disease progression. It also improves post operative outcome where joint replacement is required.

Please get in touch for help & advice on managing joint pain, or are needing assistance following joint replacement or other orthopaedic surgery.

β˜†β˜† FRIDAY PHYSIO FACTS β˜†β˜†

β˜† Physiotherapy is a profession, rather than a specific treatment. Evidence based treatment may incorporate a range of different interventions used to help restore movement & function.

β˜† The use of Physiotherapeutic interventions have been recorded in history for thousands of years, with manual therapy being advocated by Hippocrates as far back as 460BC

β˜† The use of the title 'Physiotherapist' is protected by law & can only be used by practitioners who have obtained the relevant degree level qualification in Physiotherapy & are registered with the regulatory body HCPC (Health Care & Professions Council).

β˜† Physiotherapy treatment is used to help people with a wide range of conditions, including neurological & respiratory problems, as well as musculoskeletal conditions

β˜† Musculoskeletal conditions that may benefit from Physiotherapy treatment are back & neck pain, muscle & joint problems, sports injuries & orthopaedic problems.

β˜† Physiotherapy treatment is beneficial for animals as well as people!

If you would like to find out how Physiotherapy treatment can help you (or your pets!), please get in touch.

The dry, sunny weather is a great time to enjoy the outdoors & increase activity levels.

Having the beautiful New Forest on the doorstep is perfect for getting out in the countryside, whether you enjoy walking, running or cycling.

Negotiating uneven ground can be great for improving strength, stability & balance. It can, however, sometimes result in injury, such as ankle sprains.

If you do suffer from an ankle sprain & are unable to weight bear it is best to get it checked out by a medical professional to rule out bony injury or major soft tissue disruption.

Initial treatment in the acute stages should follow the PRICE protocol
- Protection
- Rest
- Ice
- Compression
- Elevation

It is now recognised that inflammation is an important part of the healing process, so should not be discouraged. However, excessive or prolonged swelling is likely to be painful & may slow healing so may need to be controlled.

Try to move your foot & ankle regularly to encourage return to full joint mobility. Gentle weight bearing as pain allows will help to promote healing & return to function.

The majority of low grade sprains will resolve within 3- 6 weeks. If progress is slow or you are struggling with recovery, Physiotherapy can help you get back to your usual activities.

Please get in touch if you need help/ advice recovering from joint/ soft tissue injuries.
