Important Update for Families in Warwickshire!

Warwickshire County Council has awarded the new 0-19 Public Health Nursing Service to HCRG Care Group. From 1st December, the service will be fully integrated, bringing both health visiting and school nursing services under one roof for children, young people and families.

Until 30th November, Connect for Health will continue to deliver the School Nursing service as usual, including accepting referrals and delivering programmes such as the Health Needs Assessment (HNA) and National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP).

While some minor interruptions may occur as services and systems are transferred to HCRG Care Group, we will be working closely to minimise this.

For health and wellbeing support from 1st December, call the Warwickshire Child and Family Wellbeing Service on 0300 247 0072!

πŸŽƒ Heading out this Halloween? πŸ‘»
Whether you're out with friends or at a party, staying safe means you can enjoy the night without any scares (the real kind, anyway πŸ‘€).

Here are our top tips for a safe and fun Halloween:
πŸ§‘β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘ Stick with your group – Stay with people you trust and look out for each other.
πŸ“± Keep your phone charged – Just in case you need to contact someone or get directions.
πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Be street smart – Stay in well-lit areas and avoid shortcuts through quiet or unfamiliar places.
🍬 Watch what you eat and drink – Only accept treats from people you know and keep your drink with you at all times.
🎭 Costume check – Make sure you can see clearly and move safely in what you’re wearing.

Have fun, make memories - and stay safe!

πŸŽƒ Halloween is full of fun, but safety comes first! πŸ‘»
From costumes to trick-or-treating, here are some top tips to help keep your child safe this Halloween:

πŸ§₯ Be seen – Choose bright costumes or add reflective tape so your child is visible in the dark.
πŸ•―οΈ Flame-free fun – Use LED candles instead of real flames in pumpkins and decorations.
πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Stay with an adult – Young children should always be accompanied by a trusted adult when out trick-or-treating.
🍬 Check the treats – Make sure sweets are sealed and safe to eat before your child tucks in.
πŸšͺ Respect others – Remind children to only visit houses with lights/decorations and be mindful of those who don’t celebrate Halloween.

πŸ“± Looking to reduce your child’s screen time? You're not alone, and small changes can make a big difference for their sleep, focus, and wellbeing.

Here are some simple ways to help manage screen time at home:
⏱️ Set clear limits – Be consistent with daily screen time boundaries.
🚫 Create screen-free zones – Keep bedrooms, mealtimes, and family spaces tech-free.
πŸ“… Plan a screen-free routine – Build in regular times for reading, outdoor play, or creative activities.
🎨 Offer alternatives – Board games, crafts, and sports are great swaps.
πŸ‘€ Be a role model – Show healthy screen habits yourself.
πŸ’¬ Talk about it – Help your child understand why limits are important.
πŸ“² Use devices wisely – Turn on blue light filters and set automatic β€˜downtime’ on devices.

πŸ’‘ Remember: it's not about cutting screens out completely, but using them in a balanced, healthy way.

πŸ“±βœ¨ Screens are everywhere in our children’s lives - from learning apps and TV shows to video calls and gaming. But did you know that too much screen time, especially before bed, can impact how well your child sleeps?

Here’s why:
πŸ•’ Using tablets, phones, TVs, or computers close to bedtime can delay when your child feels sleepy by keeping their brain alert and stimulated.
πŸŒ™ Screens emit blue light, which tricks the brain into thinking it’s still daytime. This lowers the production of melatonin - the hormone that acts like your body’s β€œsleep switch” to help you relax and fall asleep.
😴 When melatonin levels drop, it becomes harder for children to fall asleep and stay asleep, disrupting their sleep routine.

Melatonin is produced naturally when it gets dark, telling the body to wind down and prepare for restful sleep. Too much blue light from screens delays this process.

To help your child get the best sleep possible, try to limit screen use at least an hour before bedtime and encourage calming activities instead.

🚭 Stoptober 2025 – Helping young people to breathe easier

If your child or teen is smoking and wants to stop, they don’t have to do it alone. Quitting can be tough, but with the right support, it's possible - and worth it for their health and future.

Here’s how you can support them:
πŸ’¬ Talk openly – Stay calm, listen without judgement, and offer your support.
🧠 Share the facts – Smoking harms growing lungs, heart health, and energy levels.
🀝 Encourage professional help – The school nurse is here to support them in confidence.
πŸ“± Use free NHS tools – Stoptober offers apps, advice, and local stop smoking services.

πŸŽƒπŸ‘» Planning your child’s Halloween costume? Safety first!
Costumes should be spooky - but not risky! Here are our top tips to help keep your child safe while they enjoy the fun:

🧯 Check the label – Choose costumes labelled flame-resistant.
πŸ•―οΈ Avoid real flames – Use battery-operated candles in pumpkins instead of lit ones.
πŸ‘οΈ See and be seen – Make sure masks don’t block vision, and add reflective strips or glow sticks to help them stay visible in the dark.
πŸ‘Ÿ Keep it comfy – Ensure costumes fit well to prevent trips and falls.
πŸ”” Test makeup first – Do a patch test to avoid allergic reactions, and remove it before bed.

Have a safe, spooky, and fun Halloween!

Would you know what to do if your child had a burn or scald?
Acting quickly and calmly can make all the difference. Here are some top first aid steps from the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) that every parent and carer should know:

Remember: COOL, CALL, COVER...

🧊 COOL the burn for 20 minutes under cool running water.
πŸ“ž CALL for help for any burn bigger than a 50p coin: 999, NHS 111 / NHS Direct in Wales or your GP.
🚫 COVER the burn loosely with cling film

These simple steps can reduce pain and prevent further injury.

🧠 Help them understand the risks – Va**ng isn't risk-free, especially for growing bodies.
🀝 Encourage support – Your child can speak to the school nurse in confidence.

πŸ«– Hot Water Bottles: Comforting - But Can Be Dangerous πŸ”₯
Hot water bottles can help soothe aches and keep kids cosy, but if not used safely, they can cause serious burns and scalds.

Here are our top tips to protect your child:
βœ… Check for wear and tear – Rubber can deteriorate over time and may leak or burst.
🌸 Look for the flower symbol – It shows when the bottle was made.
⏳ Don't use bottles over 2 years old – Replace them regularly.
🚫 Never use boiling water – Use hot (but not boiling) water to avoid weakening the rubber.
πŸ§₯ Always use a cover – Never place it directly on the skin.
