How do you know you’re burnt out?

Burnout is your soul asking for silence
If you can relate to any of these thoughts your body maybe warning you that you need rest.
“I’m tired... but I don’t know why.”
“I’m doing everything right... yet something feels off.”
“Why am I putting things off”
“Why can’t I sleep when I’m exhausted”

Thoughts like these is your inner world saying:
I need space to breathe
I need fewer expectations & more alignment
I need pauses, not just productivity
I need to be heard, not pushed to do more.

Giving yourself the gift of silence & rest isn’t laziness - It’s regulation!

When you don’t listen to the signals your body is giving you, it starts speaking louder—
through exhaustion, irritability, emotional numbness, or disconnection & in some instances can force you to stop through illness.

This week is Children’s Mental Health Week

This year’s theme is ‘This is My Place’. Organised by this initiative focuses on fostering a sense of belonging, safety, & community for children to improve their emotional wellbeing. Schools, families, & communities can access free resources, including assembly guides & activity packs, to support this theme.

Our children can feel very strong & intense emotions & feelings that they don’t always know how to deal with & move past. With the work I do with young people, it’s also extremely common that that they don’t know how to communicate these feelings, they struggle to label them or give them a name, but they can always tell you where in their bodies they feel them.

Using visual tools like a ‘Feelings Wheel’ and ‘Mood cards’ can help children & young people identify what they are feeling & help them open up to explore why.

Today is Time to Talk Day

What is Time to Talk Day? It is the nation’s biggest mental health conversation. It’s a day for all of us to come together to talk, listen, & change lives.

Why is talking important?
Speaking openly and honestly can be a powerful first step toward better mental health — it truly can save lives! When we talk about what we’re going through, it helps break down stigma and makes it easier for people to reach out for support.
Even now, there are moments when our experiences feel overwhelming or too heavy to put into words, & that’s exactly when talking can make the biggest difference.

Behind every window is a story you may never see and a weight someone might be quietly carrying. We rarely know the full picture of what others are going through.
Today is a reminder that you don’t need to be an expert to listen — sometimes simply showing up is enough. One conversation won’t fix everything, but it can remind someone that they don’t have to face their behind‑the‑scenes struggles on their own 💚

Today is World Cancer Day. This year’s theme is “United by Unique.” It defines the crucial role of personalised, patient-centered care in the fight against cancer. It highlights the importance of adapting cancer treatments to cater to the unique needs of each individual.

As a Counsellor, I work with people living with cancer & their family’s. Getting a diagnosis and adapting your life is an extremely difficult & distressing experience. Having the space to talk about your worries & fears without feeling you’re a burden to your family & friends can really help you navigate life with cancer.

Counselling gives you the time & space to just be you.

Recognising your feelings is essential for mental health, emotional regulation, & better decision-making. It transforms raw emotions into useful information, allowing you to understand your needs, build stronger relationships, & respond to situations constructively rather than reacting impulsively.
Failing to recognise feelings can lead to increased stress, anxiety, or harmful outbursts. 

💚 Improves Emotional Regulation: Identifying emotions helps you manage them, allowing you to calm down or adjust behaviors rather than feeling overwhelmed.
💚 Enhances Decision-Making: When you are in tune with your emotions, you can make more rational, less impulsive, & better-informed decisions.
💚 Boosts Mental Health & Resilience: Acknowledging feelings reduces the likelihood of suppressing them, which can prevent long-term mental health struggles.

Being able to label your emotions is one of the best things you can do to improve your mental health.

In my work with clients, it’s quite common that people struggle to identify & communicate the emotion they are feeling.
In order to move forward with a challenge & learn more about ourselves, we need to be able to process the feelings & emotions we have & putting your feelings into words makes them easier to cope with.

For example:
- Rating your emotions, such as anger on a scale of 1-5 can reduce your heart rate & help calm your nervous system.
- Describing your emotions when dealing with intense emotions increases your courage in facing it.
- Giving an emotion a name or label, like “that’s sadness” or “this is fear” decreases the activity in your amygdala in your brain which is where your fight-or-flight response comes from.

The next time that you’re feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, try using a feelings wheel (above) & giving your emotion a name & a score (1-5).
Learning how to treat yourself with greater compassion - no matter what you’re feeling — is one of the most important happiness skills there is 💚

Talking therapies can help you explore your feelings & identify emotions in a safe & calm space that enables you to gain a better understanding of yourself & can positively increase your self-confidence & self-esteem.

January is widely recognised as Self-Love Month, it gives you time to focus on your mental, emotional, & physical well-being as a new year begins, encouraging acts like setting boundaries, practicing self-compassion, & building healthy habits.
This doesn’t mean setting resolution’s or big ambitious goals & putting additional pressure on ourselves, it’s an opportunity to really concentrate on ‘you’ & what you need to feel more content.

Self love isn’t selfish - it’s necessary! 💚

Only 40% of people struggling with mental health recieve professional help, not because help doesn’t work but because stigma still exists.

Remember - it’s ok, not to be ok.
