GO LONG OR GO HOME 🏃

Marathon Long Runs

How much is too much?

While long runs are the absolute essential of a marathon training block, I think a lot of runners end up running far too long. Especially beginners.

It’s clear that longer runs and higher weekly volumes of training equate to better marathon finish times.

However,

This study from Fokkema et al., (2020) showed that runs of over 35km don’t affect marathon performance, when compared to 30-35km runs.

I.e. longer isn’t always better…. Phew! 😅

This suggests there is a point of diminishing returns, and this may be different for everyone.

The recovery time from long long efforts can take so long to recover from that they actually detract from future training and racing performance.

There is a sweet spot here.

For beginner runners, it may actually be detrimental to go over 3 hours or over 35km.

For more experiences runners, there is a pay off between intensity and volume in a training plan.

We see influencers and pro athletes doing huge sessions on here. and that’s fine because they’ve built up towards this (in most cases)

But don’t feel you HAVE to run that distance just becuase you’ve seen someone else do it. The evidence doesn’t support it.

Remember, the body doesn’t recognise distance. It just feels training load and the marathon is unique in the fact that you won’t cover the distance prior to race day.
This can be a challenge psychologically.

Think, what am I gaining by running over 3 hours?

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Happy running 😁

As proven at the end of this video I’m a daft, clumsy physio.

I’m also a self confessed AI sceptic but sometimes tech comes along that makes your job 10X easier and improves patient care.

This is one of those times.
hip.physio recommended trying recently.

Seeing 20+ patients a day in a busy GP setting can melt your brain but working with my new best mate Heidi has been a total game changer.

Not an Ad, it’s just class🤖

Great weekend of CPD brushing up on all things Hip and Groin 🤓
hip.physio promised to simplify the hip… and he delivered.

Such a fantastic course! If you’re a physio who finds the hip and groin a complex area (most of us) you have to get yourself on one of Mehmet’s courses.

Brilliant to chat with some of the folk too, what a fab clinic space🤩

Back in clinic tomorrow and looking forward to putting it into practice 🫡

P.s. if you’re wondering - the answer to the question on slide 2 if a yes! 😉

What matters more when it comes to injury? 🤕

Weekly increases, or individual session increases in mileage? 🤔

This piece of research took thousands, and I mean THOUSANDS of peoples garmin data 🏃‍♀️

They analysed training metrics and patterns against injury.

Results 👇

👉An increase in single-session running distance significantly increased the rate of overuse running related injuries. I.e. The change in your ‘long run’ distance matters more than your overall weekly mileage when it comes to injury risk.

👉Interestingly, week-to-week ratio (i.e. the classic Strava graph) was not associated with increased injury risk in this study

Based on this study, I reckon adding a line for the peak single session distance that week would be a useful addition for users to monitor injury risk. What do you say ?

⚠️ Disclaimer: This study has one major flaw that injuries were self reported by participants therefore never verified or confirmed clinically. We also have to account for the fact running related injuries are depend on A LOT of different factors, load and volume of training are a small part of a bigger picture ⚠️

I’d be interested to hear athletes and coaches thoughts on this in the comments ⬇️

January Transfer News ✍️

Welcome to the team Tom.

We are genuinely buzzing to be getting Tom on board at OnTrack, even though he wears a Salford Harriers vest 🎽

He fits our clinic values perfectly and brings with him excellent experience.

Tom Potter is a HCPC and CSP registered chartered physiotherapist with a First-Class degree from the University of Nottingham. He has experience across the NHS services, private sports injury clinics, and elite sport. Outside of OnTrack, he also works with professional rugby league team, St Helens RLFC. His skills and knowledge from this elite sport environment are highly valued by us here at OnTrack and will continue to drive our standards.

Tom is a high-level competitive runner with Salford Harriers and his introduction to the team means is no longer the fastest runner in his own clinic

Tom specialises in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and sports injuries, using a patient-centred approach to help individuals return to full function and optimise performance.

Tom is starting at OnTrack next week and will be doing a Wednesday clinic. This means we have more availability for appointments too!

We have a limited time offer of 20% all appointments with Tom for the rest of January.

DM or visit the website to book!

Who physio’s the physio?! Part I

Injury diaries are back 🤕

I’ve been rehabbing and managing a hamstring ni**le since my Berlin marathon training block

As much as it hasn’t stopped me running and has improved since doing less miles… it’s certainly not shifting.

It’s about time I got it properly check out!

Good Runners DO NOT make good skiers ❌

Here’s why…

As a runner, I feel very in tune with my body

I have really good proprioception i.e. my brain subconsciously knows exactly where my body is and what it is doing.

When it came to learning skiing, my brain started to apply everything it knew about movement and mechanics to this new activity.

Resulting in a lot of falls and a lot of F*%&’s

A prime example of this is controlling speed downhill.

Running 🏃‍♂️
Weight backwards (sitting back)
Quicker step rate
Shorter stride

Skiing ⛷️
Weight forwards
Longer and bigger turns.

I quickly realised, with the help of my instructor Hugo, that running technique is basically the complete opposite to ski technique.

I spent a few days unlearning some bad habits before actually learning to ski.

As a physio and run coach, these differences fascinated me! 🤓

Anyway, back to running circles on a track in wythenshawe on a cold, wet tuesday night

When you give chat GPT the raw text from your reviews and it returns all of your business values 🥹

Aside from the glowing feedback, we love this analysis because it directly reflects what we’re all about at OnTrack.

It also reminds me why I started this mad venture.

So, here’s to providing more high quality, individualised care which empowers you to find long term health and performance benefits, rather than quick-fixes.
