On Friday 18th July, we had the joy of celebrating REACHE’s inaugural Graduation Ceremony - a special event to honour the incredible achievement
of our members and alumni who have successfully obtained their NMC or GMC registration.
Rula Hamad (REACHE Alumni Liaison Officer and GP Trainee), 13 years after her actual graduation from medical school in Damascus, poignantly expressed how much the Graduation Ceremony meant to her. Having been made a refugee twice, Rula never had the opportunity to attend a Graduation Ceremony, thus for her and all of our graduates, the REACHE ceremony was “about reclaiming the steps that we were never allowed to take.” Rula brought to our attention how our graduates have succeeded against all odds, making their achievements truly remarkable: “You woke up every day to a world that often told you you cannot. And you showed and you proved every single day that you can. You studied for the exams in your third or fourth language. You studied in between immigration interviews and Home Office letters. You carried memories of war and trauma and separation. And still you didn’t stop.”
We also had the pleasure to hear from MP for Salford, Rebecca Long Bailey, who celebrated the contribution of refugees and asylum seekers to Salford, which has officially been named a City of Sanctuary. Thank you to Rebecca for giving a voice to displaced people and bringing the impact of the work of organisations like ours to the forefront of local and national conversations.
Aisha Awan, Director of REACHE, reflected on the graduates’ lived experiences of the “imbalance of power” and on the incredibly difficult circumstances they have overcome to work clinically and serve their communities in the UK, whilst also calling for systemic change. Addressing our graduates, she said: “You are here because you fought through the long grinding weight of exhaustion- and proved you never should have been excluded in the first place.”
We would also like to thank Daniel Saunders, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust , for attending and presenting certificates to our graduates.
Thank you also to Alex Reppold, Deputy Director for Workforce Training and Education NHS England, for continuing to champion REACHE, ensuring we are continually supported by NHS England.
Finally, thank you to Nadir Abdelmotlab (Clinical Supervisor) and colleagues from The University of Manchester: Jo Hart (Head of the Division of Medical Education), Lucie Byrne-Davis (Director of Medical Education Partnerships), Rachel Lindley (Faculty Co-Lead for Service Learning) and Dr Philip Drake (Director of the Justice Hub) for coming to show your support.
