Nicky is one of two new student specialist community public health nurses who joined the NCA this September.

This role provides a pathway for registered nurses or midwives to train to become school nurses by completing a full-time, 12-month apprenticeship with The University of Salford.

We reached out to Nicky during his first few weeks with us to see how he has been settling in:

“My first week went really well. I started with my university induction before joining my team in practice. There was a lot of information to take in, but it was manageable!

Just before starting at the Trust, I sadly lost my mum and have been dealing with grief. The support I received from my new colleagues during this time has meant so much, and I continue to feel very moved by everyone’s words of comfort, and gestures of care and compassion, even now.

I’m slowly getting to grips with my apprenticeship and looking forward to supporting children and families in our community. Mum was so happy when I got the job, and I’m determined to make her proud and see where this new chapter takes me.”

We’d like to thank Nicky for sharing his experience, and we wish him all the very best as he continues his career with us.

A further 76 newly qualified nurses are set to join the NCA later this month – our second cohort since the start of September!

They follow in the footsteps of many others who began their nursing careers right here in Greater Manchester.

One of them is Dionne Johnson, Unit Manager for the Oldham Community Diagnostic Centre.

Dionne began her nursing journey as a staff nurse on the general surgery ward in Oldham before specialising in day surgery and pre-operative assessment. Her nursing career has been rooted in Oldham for an impressive 32 years, supporting patients across a variety of services, including research and innovation.

As Dionne looks forward to partial retirement and an exciting new chapter in Scotland, she leaves some words of wisdom for our new nursing starters:
“Gain as much varied experience as you can to help you discover what you truly enjoy. Explore different roles and specialties, continue studying and learning, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Get involved - shadow colleagues, learn processes from start to finish, and stay genuinely curious. Take time to understand the wider team and how each role contributes to patient care. Most importantly, remember to look after yourself. Practice self-care and speak up if you ever feel overwhelmed.”

Thank you Dionne, and a warm welcome to all our newly qualified nurses. We’re excited to see where your journeys take you!

We’re encouraging NCA hiring managers to share questions in advance to help candidates feel more confident and prepared ahead of their interview date.

We know interviews can be an uncomfortable and nerve-wracking experience, and sometimes it’s the anxiety of the unknown that causes people to panic, draw blank or forget key pieces of information on the day.

To help reduce stress, managers now have the option to provide their interview questions in advance, giving candidates a preview of the format and what to expect. This allows candidates to put their best selves forward and helps interview panels focus on assessing genuine ability, rather than just interview technique.

Ricky, children’s unit manager, said: “I choose to give interview questions in advance to give equal opportunities to all candidates. I know all too well that some people thrive in an interview situation, whereas others do not. By providing interview questions in advance, I get a better sense of the skills and values of the person answering the questions. It allows me to see the potential of the individual with greater clarity, as they have time to understand the question.”

Career and employment fairs are a fantastic opportunity to connect with students and graduates from a range of health and care disciplines.

On Monday, we had the pleasure of attending Manchester Metropolitan University’s AHP Employment Fair, where we met many students eager to explore their next steps after university.

At the event, we discussed our recruitment process, shared tips on applications, and offered advice on how to stand out in interviews.

Fionn McLoughlin, NCA rotational physiotherapist, said: “I really enjoyed attending this event. I am a former student of MMU and I remember attending these events in my final year. I am privileged to be on the other side of this, and I was more than happy to pass on tips and tricks for interviews and applications.”

We've been named as an Employer of Choice by Manchester Metropolitan University 🏆

We're very proud that Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust has been named as an Employer of Choice by Manchester Metropolitan University.
The accolade has been developed to recognise employers who consistently provide high quality opportunities to the university’s students and graduates.
A key part of this is the student internship programme within our Research and Innovation department, which sees students from the university’s biomedical science degree take up a year-long placement as research support workers.
They gain wide experience, including screening patients and gaining their consent for research studies, handling samples and work in laboratories, data management and more.
Our latest students - Peasca, Amanjot, Katie and Natalia - have just started and we wish them all the best for an exciting and valuable year ahead!

In September, we confirmed start dates for 370 new colleagues, many of whom will be joining us before the end of 2025 - starting the new year with a new role.

We also secured 150 start dates for our nursing and midwifery teams, which ensured 115 newly qualified professionals could join our preceptorship / training teams and begin the first steps into their new careers. 👏

Here’s to another frightfully good month of recruitment success! 🕸️

We hire people who are passionate about their professions!

Silvi will be joining us as a dietetic assistant in November, after qualifying from Manchester Metropolitan University.

She already holds a master’s degree in nutrition and is excited to build on her dietetic training with the Oldham community team.

If you’re interested in joining our AHP family as an assistant, we’re currently looking for someone with an NVQ Level 3 in Care (Diagnostics and Therapeutics) to support our speech and language therapists at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

More details can be found in the comments section.

What day is it? 👀🤭

We’re lucky to be able to celebrate National Allied Health Professions (AHP) Day with so many wonderful and talented colleagues.

As the third-largest clinical workforce within health and care, AHPs play a vital role in transforming services, improving patient outcomes, and shaping the future of the NHS.

How many of the 14 AHP roles can you name?
