🌍💛 World Mental Health Day 💛🌍

Today our staff and learners came together for a lesson all about mental health and wellbeing.
Everyone wrote their own inspirational mental health quote on a t-shirt — a reminder we can look back on whenever we need that little boost.

Our black and yellow design represents YoungMinds, a charity that supports young people’s mental health.

Good morning 🌅

The shop is closed today whilst Matt gets some more upkeep done. Today is a little different though as he has a helper from the amazing Supporting Choice Ltd learning some life skills in terms of maintenance of machinery.

I am at Coldyhill all day working on our announcement. I’m super nervous to reveal as it’s a big change for us, however, we are confident it’s going to be great 👍🏼 I may do a sneak peek this week 😏

Another little secret we’ve been keeping is that we are EXTREMELY excited and honoured to be working with Supporting Choice Ltd in hosting neurodiverse young adults to assist them in integrating into working life and/or learning a life skill.

Starting from today we will have an extra team member helping us out on a weekly basis. Please treat them with kindness, patience and understanding. They are often very nervous, anxious and socially apprehensive.

This is incredibly rewarding for us and a privilege to hopefully help set them up for life.

🏫 Planning Permission GRANTED
Planning permision has been granted for Supporting Choice Ltd to operate a non-residential educational facility at 5–7 Hoxton Road, Scarborough. The centre will deliver targeted employability training for neurodiverse young people aged 16–25, especially those with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

📚 Nature of Use
- Independent training provider offering small-group and one-to-one sessions
- Curriculum includes CV writing, interview prep, digital literacy, life skills, vocational tasters, and Functional Skills in English and Maths
- Tailored for learners with autism, ADHD, and anxiety-related needs

👥 Learner Impact
- Supports underserved youth who struggle in mainstream education
- Promotes confidence, independence, and access to employment or further education
- Proven outcomes in work placements, volunteering, and paid employment
- Builds partnerships with local employers and community groups

🌍 Community Benefit
- Addresses local skills gaps and supports inclusive economic growth
- Reduces reliance on statutory services
- Enhances community cohesion and aligns with local SEND and economic strategies

🏢 Operational Details
- Core hours: 9am–4pm (Mon–Fri), with extended sessions until 7pm
- Staff: 6 FTE including teachers, SEN practitioners, and admin support
- Learner capacity: 4–6 per session, max 10 on site at any time

🛠️ Planning and Site Modifications
- Change of use requested under Planning Use Class F1(a) for educational training
- Minor retail activity linked to training (e.g. printing/marketing goods) expected to have minimal street impact
- Refurbishment completed to improve accessibility and appearance—retrospective permission sought for these works

✅ Conclusion
The proposal offers:
- A low-impact, weekday-only educational use
- A vital service for vulnerable learners
- A productive reuse of a vacant building
- Visual and social improvements aligned with planning policies

We are lucky to have valuable employers, and work placement providers, in the area that look beyond qualifications and support those with skills, aptitude and qualities that aren't measured under exam conditions.
