Peptide YY is a small peptide hormone with two tyrosine πŸ‘ amino acid building blocks. This hormone is released from the gut in response to consuming a meal to tell the body it is full and, therefore, to decrease appetite.

Foods that make a person feel fuller, such as whole grains, vegetables, and protein, increase PYY secretion, thereby signalling the body to stop eating.

As a result, PYY is part of the mechanism by which satiety-promoting foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and protein, can help prevent weight gain because PYY gives a stronger signal to stop eating after consuming whole foods compared to processed foods, which tend to stimulate less release of PYY.

Therefore, it is important for us to remember the multifaceted ways in which whole foods promote hormonal balance.

Also for women, PYY satiety signal varies across the menstrual cycle, which means the challenges of appetite regulation are more difficult during certain periods of the cycle.
