One of our OT's has been working with a young person who, for too long, could not get into a car.
The anxiety was overwhelming.
Fast heart. Tight tummy. Fight-or-flight in full force.
Their brain was doing exactly what it thought it needed to do — protect.
This is a BMOT Foundation case.
A family who had nowhere else to turn.
No immediate funding.
No quick solution.
Just a child whose world was getting smaller.
Parents who were worrying more and more.
We didn’t start with driving. We started with building therapeutic trust, activity analysis and gentle encouragement.
We started with standing near the car.
Then opening the door.
Then cleaning windows.
Then sitting inside for a few seconds.
Then getting back out.
No pressure.
No rushing.
No “you’ll be fine.”
Just graded goals.
Safety. Control. Co-regulation.
And now?
He can travel short distances to see family.
He can go to the park.
He can visit the train station.
That’s not “just a car journey.”
That’s access back to life.
Access to community.
Access to childhood.
This is what happens when the right support is available at the right time.
The BMOT Foundation exists for families who fall through the gaps.
Families who are waiting.
Families who are overwhelmed.
Families who just need someone to step in and say, “We’ve got you. We will help”
If you believe every child deserves access to their world — please consider supporting the Foundation so we can keep saying yes.
Because sometimes the difference between being stuck and moving forward…is simply having somewhere to turn.
