Scars are not just skin deep, they are at least as deep as the wound/incision and can often be deeper. Scars can also form adhesions where they become anchored to structures beneath the skin such as surrounding muscle, bone or organs.
Scars that anchor or adhere to core muscles or connective tissue of the torso can potentially restrict the muscles associated with breathing, either directly or indirectly. This often occurs gradually so you may not even be aware that your breathing is not what it used to be. If you are aware of respiratory decline you may even not realise that the scar may be involved.
