Today I am at the HLP Therapy Scar Symposium at the NEC.

I have been thoroughly enjoying listening to the seminars, bumping into old friends and meeting new people as well as a few people I have been stalking online but hadn’t previously actually met.

I am now sitting comfortably following lunch and ready for a full afternoon 😀

I have been looking forward to the next couple of weeks all year! Two weeks today I will be attending Therapy Expo 2025 at the NEC for two days of seminars, demonstrations and networking. But before that; On Saturday I am attending the inaugural HLP Therapy Scar Symposium, also at the NEC. Thanks to the amazing Hannah Poulton; there will approximately 175 delegates attending seminar and workshops plus an exciting line up of exhibitors.

As a therapist, I am committed to continual development in order to remain current in terms of the latest evidence based practice so that I can continue to provide the best service that I can.

Today is Scar Appreciation Day.

At the beginning of September I was privileged to get the opportunity to meet and treat a lovely group of people through the burns survivor support group; Dans Fund.

The people I met had one thing in common; something had happened to them that had changed the course of their lives forever. Some suffered burns through accidents but several were harmed through the devastating and violent actions of others.

The major thing that inspired me was nobody seemed to be wasting time or effort on hating or seeking revenge on the perpetrators of their injuries. Instead, they focused their energies on healing and getting their lives on track; building a stronger future for themselves.

We often refer to people who have suffered terrible injuries or illnesses as brave. Simply suffering life changing injuries or disease is not brave because bravery is a choice. The people I met were brave not because they had suffered but because of the fortitude and dignity with which they had faced their challenges.

True character comes not from the things that have happened to us, but from the way in which we have handled those situations.

Only one month to go before the inaugural HLP Therapy Scar Symposium at The NEC Birmingham.

I have already watched the pre-recorded materials which were all very informative. I am looking forward to an exciting line up of speakers, workshops and exhibitors as well as seeing some old friends and hopefully making some new acquaintances.

Recently, a regular client came to see me for his usual lower back treatment. On this occasion however, he also asked me to take a look at his shoulder.

He reported that one day, whilst getting dressed, he felt “something go” in his upper arm/shoulder. Over the coming days the usual pattern emerged of gradual stiffening and increasing pain in the shoulder joint.

By the time he arrived in my clinic, he had a very limited range of motion and an ever present niggling pain.

I wasted no time in whipping out my new ultrasound machine and getting to work on the shoulder.

Afterwards, he admitted that he was sceptical that anything was happening during his treatment until I invited him to move his arm. He was pleasantly surprised to find that the pain was virtually nonexistent and that mobility to the stiffened shoulder had returned.

Do you have an injury, new or old, that is holding you back from doing the things you want to do? Book a consultation now to begin your recovery.

Another fantastic review for which I am truly grateful.

Many of my clients come to see me for very personal or sensitive reasons and because of this, I do not solicit reviews. I feel that in asking for a review I am putting them in a position where I asking them to compromise their confidentiality.

It is therefore especially gratifying when clients take the time to write such wonderful and kind words. I am also comforted by the knowledge that, should my massage career ever come to an end, a future in standup comedy awaits me.

I am constantly striving to improve my therapeutic skills and widen the treatment options available to me. Those who regularly read my posts (does anyone actually read my posts?) will know that I have recently added therapeutic ultrasound to my armamentarium. But why, with such a wide range of options available to me, did I choose ultrasound? Well the answer to that is simple; it’s because I fell down the stairs.

Several years ago, one Saturday evening (No! I was completely sober!) I fell down the stairs and, in an attempt to arrest my fall, I reached out and grabbed the bannister. This resulted in a small tear to the long head of biceps on my right arm. Over the coming 24 hours the pain built and my shoulder stiffened, becoming increasingly less mobile. For several weeks I struggled to use the arm but eventually it freed up enough to use it carefully. I continued to adapt every day tasks to avoid using the arm because of the continued pain.

After about nine months I finally got my NHS physio appointment in which I was given ultrasound treatment. Instantly the pain had gone away and I could begin to use my arm normally again.

This is why, when weighing up the options for additional methodologies, I chose ultrasound. Because I would like to help my clients in the way that I was helped… but without the nine month wait.

In recent posts I have explained what therapeutic ultrasound (TUS) is and how it works. Today I am going to explore some of the common musculoskeletal conditions that can benefit from TUS.

TUS can be used in both chronic and acute injuries. With standard massage therapy there is not much that can be done in the first few days following injury. With TUS this is not the case. Injuries can be treated very quickly following an injury. This can help reduce pain but also enhance and accelerate the healing process.

For older injuries that may still be causing pain or movement restrictions; TUS can still be very useful as it can reduce discomfort, increase range of motion and create a continued healing process .

TUS can also be useful for longer term inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, bursitis, plantar fasciitis and carpal tunnel syndrome. Additionally, inflammatory tendon conditions such as tennis and golfers elbow can be eased.

The scope of TUS is wide and is a well established treatment offered by sports therapists, sports massage therapists and physiotherapists all over the world.

In my last post I wrote about what Therapeutic Ultrasound (TUS) is. Today I will try to briefly explain how it works.

TUS has two main effects on the body which can be termed Thermal and Non-Thermal.

Thermal Effects; A constant stream of ultrasound creates heat within the tissues. Heat increases blood flow which in turn brings more oxygen. Additionally, heat improves tissue flexibility. Overall, this can improve tissue healing and speed up the recovery process.

Non-Thermal Effects; TUS affects tissue cells through its physical actions. One is called cavitation; the production of microscopic bubbles in tissue fluids which effect tissue cells and give rise to a biochemical reaction which promotes tissue repair and anti-inflammatory responses. The ultrasound waves also create movement within the fluids around the cells, this is called Acoustic Streaming and leads to what is described as micromassage. This is thought to stimulate production of growth factors and increase protein synthesis amongst other things. Again, speeding up the healing process.

TUS can therefore be useful at all stages of injury and recovery. By pulsing the acoustic wave, the thermal effect can be minimised which makes ultrasound suitable in the early stages of injury. Once the inflammatory stage of recovery is complete, the thermal effects can be increased in order to assist with the later phases of healing including chronic issues associated with poor recovery.

In my next post, I will take a look at some examples of the kinds of issues that TUS can be useful for.
