Keep the warmth, lose the risk: National Fire Chiefs Council issue winter emollient safety warning

As colder weather arrives, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) are urging the public to be aware of fire risks linked to emollient skin creams.

Millions of people use emollient creams to relieve dry or itchy skin during winter. While the creams themselves are not flammable, residue from them can build up on clothing, bedding, bandages and soft furnishings. This can make these materials ignite more easily and burn more rapidly if they come into contact with a flame, cigarette or close to heat sources like open fires, electric bar, gas or halogen heaters.

To help keep people safe this winter, the MHRA and NFCC are highlighting three simple precautions:

1. Keep away from flames πŸ”₯
Avoid smoking, candles and other naked flames and open fires if fabrics have dried on emollient products. Contaminated fabrics can catch fire quickly and cause a fire to spread quickly.

2. Keep warm safely πŸ₯Ά
Sit at least 1 metre away from open fires and heaters, sitting too close could set light to fabrics.

3. Wash bedding and clothing regularly Keep the warmth, lose the risk: MHRA and National Fire Chiefs Council issue winter emollient safety warning

Wash items at the highest temperature recommended on the care label to help reduce cream build-up. Washing does not remove residue completely, so continued caution is important.

β€œWinter brings warmth, comfort and more time indoors – but it can also bring increased fire risk. Residues from emollient creams can make fabrics burn faster than people expect. Following a few straightforward steps can prevent fires and protect lives.”

Chris Bell, Emollient Lead at the National Fire Chiefs Council, said:
β€œOur crews have seen how quickly fires can escalate when skin creams are involved. We’re asking everyone – especially carers, family members and healthcare professionals – to help share this message. Keep flames and heat sources well away from contaminated fabrics, wash fabrics regularly, and follow fire safety advice. These simple actions can save lives.”

If you or a loved one uses emollient skin creams complete an online home fire safety check for advice via www.ohfsc.co.uk

Please be advised you may be signposted to another service - if your request has been Triaged by our Doctors and deemed URGENT - you will be asked to attend an emergency service such as the Urgent Treatment Centre or A&E - this decision will be made by a GP - please follow their instructions, we understand how frustrating waiting in A&E can be but a GP does not have the same facilities or expertise should it be URGENT or life threatening.

Online consultations are for non-urgent and routine requests only.

Online Consultation Fair Use Policy
Please be advised that we are receiveing multiple requests via our online consultations - Our online consultations are Triaged by one of our GPs - they make the clinical decision as to how the request is appropraited to the correct department, requests may be signposted to various options including Pharmacy First, Self Care options, or third party therapies such as talking therapies and IAPT. If the Triaging GP feels that you need to be seen in the surgery they may book you an appointment within the same day, 48 hours, within a week or within 2 weeks depending on their clinical decision and the information YOU have provided in your request.

If you have received either a phone call from a GP, a text message providing a self booking link, or indeed a message giving guidance on how to manage your request through a signposted third party such as Pharmacy first, Phyiotherapy, Talking Therapies or one of the Social prescribers then this decision has been made by a GP and should be followed - especially if you have been advised Urgent Treatment Centre or A&E. We are not an Emergency service and your request information/condition would need to be treated as an Emergency by the appropriate services.

The introduction of the Online Consultations from October 1st was a national directive from NHS England and not the surgeries decision, putting in repeated requests, calling the reception team and demanding to be seen at reception when the request has already been triaged could place you up against the Fair Use Policy
https://www.donningtonmedicalpractice.co.uk/policies/fair-use-policy/

We understand more than ever the frustrations around appointment availabilty at all GP surgeries, the online consulations work, they promote fairness and equaltiy to all - Please help the surgery to help as many patients as possible.

Fair Use Policy FAIR USE POLICY Β  Fair Use Policy As part of our commitment to providing high-quality care to all patients, Donnington Medical Practice has implemented a Fair Use Policy. This policy ensures that our services are used responsibly and equitably, allowing fair access for all patients....

Working together with Silver Threads Hall and the community to grow our PPG (patient participation group) πŸ₯°

πŸŒ› This evening we attend the Practice Patient Group meeting at Donnington Medical Practice

πŸ†˜οΈ This helps us to feed back general concerns about the Practice but also helps us in understanding the practices viewpoint including funding and NHS requirements. It also helps and supports us within our Live Well Community Hub approach in Donnington.

πŸ“ We can also contribute to and be kept informed of Practice decisions.

πŸ‘₯ The PPG needs more members to support the wonderful work it does and that could be you!
