Caroline - Expat Coach

Caroline - Expat Coach I help Expats plan their retirement, so it's something to look forward to, rather than fear. What will you do? What about family? What does 'home' mean?

Life as an Expat, and particularly one in hospitality, travel & tourism is an amazing experience, but comes with its own set of challenges that grow the longer you live and work overseas. Your situation is unique, and cannot be understood by anyone who has not been in your shoes, so who do you talk to when you need to make sense of what you are going through or what you will be facing in the future? Indecision, or fear of making changes is exactly what holds you back from creating the future you desire, rather than waiting to see what happens! Where to live after your expat life comes to an end is one of the challenges! What about the kids (let's not forget how many turn into boomerang kids over the years!!) ? Are you planning to go 'home' for your benefit, or because it is expected of you? Or are you thinking of living in a 3rd country - and are you really aware of all the challenges you may face with that decision, when you no longer have a company behind you taking care of the legalities of residing in a country that is not your own? Do your loved ones all agree with your choices and plans? have you really talked it through with them? If you don't know what you want to do yourself, then how can you you talk to them, or effectively plan for the future? We have all experienced the sort of change that leaves you feeling a little lost, out of your depth, or not quite knowing what to do with yourself. We often push it to the back of our minds to think about 'when we have more time'. But that time flies by. There is not a moment to waste of your precious 'retirement' in making costly mistakes when choosing where to live! Or maybe it's your partner who wants to have a plan, and keeps pecking away at 'making a decision' about moving home, or not. Maybe I should be talking to them? If any of the above resonates with you, then let's talk about how I can help you to plan the future, decide where you want to be, and what you want to do with your retirement, in a way that works for you. Wouldn't it be amazing to have something that you are looking forward to, rather than dreading? And even better if your partner and the whole family are also in agreement? Book a complimentary 30-minute via my calendar to find out if working together to help you plan your future is right for you https://go.oncehub.com/CarolineTapken

The hardest part of retirement planning isnโ€™t money or geography.

Itโ€™s identity.

When your life has been defined by movement, adaptability, and purpose, stepping into a new chapter without structure can feel unsettling - unless you shape it consciously.

Retirement isnโ€™t an ending.

Itโ€™s a redesign.

And redesigns start with better questions:
โ€ข What do I want more of now?
โ€ข What am I ready to leave behind?
โ€ข Who do I want to become in this next phase?

If these questions strike a nerve, it may be time to give them proper consideration - through reflection, conversation, or simply allowing yourself to think differently about what comes next. Need some help with that? Message me!

Exploring Buenos Aires Day 2. Lots of walking through this beautiful city. A visit to the cemetery, and tunnels, and a local bus ride.

Visited Eva Peron's mausoleum, and marvelled at the ornate resting places of the rich and famous.

Street art in Buenos Aires. A vibrant, diverse city, and a beautiful day!

Some people realise that neither staying nor returning quite fits.

Instead, they imagine choosing a place intentionally for the next phase of life - one shaped by lifestyle, pace, and wellbeing rather than career opportunity.

This idea can feel liberating. It can also feel daunting.

Starting again later in life isnโ€™t about chasing novelty. Itโ€™s about aligning your future with what truly matters now - while being honest about healthcare, finances, and long-term support.

If youโ€™ve ever caught yourself daydreaming about a place chosen just for this chapter, you may be closer to clarity than you think. Now we have to figure out the next steps to take. Message me, and letโ€™s talk about that.

When the conversations seem to feature retirement discussions more frequently, you start to feel an inexplicable panic setting in.

Are they dropping hints?

Are you headed for the big Heave ho?

The panic arises because you have not really thought about retirement. You have not got a plan for your life beyond work. You thought you would work until you are ready to stop - whenever that might be.

BUT

Suddenly, someone else seems to think it is time for you to go!

What do you do? You can keep your head down, and hope the conversation does not progress to a full-on discussion about when you intend leaving, OR you can start thinking about what YOU want from this next, inevitable, phase in life.

Instead of lying awake at night worrying about who might say what in the coming days and weeks, why not make your own plan?

Working with me, on creating such a plan, will save you time, stress, and help you overcome that panic and sleeplessness. Isn't it worth a 30-minute call to see how I can help you?

Then you can leave on YOUR terms, knowing that what lies ahead is exciting, and nothing to be feared.

Message me, and let's talk.

Returning to your passport country often feels like the sensible option.

Family is there. Systems feel familiar. Thereโ€™s a sense of responsibility - especially as parents age.

But many expats underestimate how much both they and their home country have changed.

What you return to may not resemble the place you left. And you may find yourself feeling like an outsider in a place everyone assumes should feel natural.

Returning home can be deeply grounding - but it can also come with unexpected emotional adjustment.

If youโ€™ve ever wondered whether โ€œhomeโ€ would still feel like home after decades away, that curiosity is worth listening to. If youโ€™d like help figuring it all out, message me.

When it's no-sugar January, but you win a Bailey's Chocolates Hamper ๐Ÿค”

Ok. So I did vaguely think about 'no sugar', but sadly, it didn't work.

And I have only opened ONE box of chocolates, so far.

Could that be why the scales refuse to budge? Hmm ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿคฃ

Many long-term expats assume theyโ€™ll simply stay where they are.

After all, life works. You know the system. You have routines, friendships, and a lifestyle that suits you.

But staying into later life requires more than familiarity.

Residency rules change. Healthcare needs evolve. Support networks shift as people come and go. What feels comfortable at 55 may feel very different at 75.

Staying can be the right choice - but only when itโ€™s intentional, not automatic.

Have you ever thought to ask whether your current country supports not just your life now - but your future self too? Do you know when is the โ€œright timeโ€ to leave?

If these thoughts are creeping into your mind more and more, letโ€™s have a conversation about how I can help you figure out what comes next.

Returning home after a life overseas can be tricky in so many ways. Returning after the age of 50 presents additional challenges.

I have written an article on LinkedIn, Substack and my website) as brief overview of some of the areas for consideration - visit my website (www.carolinetapken.com ) for a more detailed commentary, and reach out to me for conversations around the emotional and fear-driven aspects of preparing for your return.

Your years overseas shape you in ways you cannot imagine.

Returning home is not as straightforward as you think.

If you are not prepared for the reverse culture shock it can set back your progress and steal time you don't want to waste.

Should we have a conversation about preparing you for this, and overcoming at least part of the challenge of returning home?

Message me, and let's talk about that.
