Is it time to see a Podiatrist?

If you are experiencing any of the following problems or symptoms, it’s time to make an appointment to see a podiatrist (like us 🤓).

Here are our top 6 reasons to visit:

1. Numbness, pain or swelling in your foot. Occasionally suffering from sore or swollen feet is normal, but sudden pain, swelling or numbness in one foot for no apparent reason can be a sign of a more serious problem.

2. Nail fungus. Left untreated, a nail fungal infection causes the nails to become thick and discolored, and you risk it spreading to the other toenails.

3. Continuous heel pain. Heel pain can be caused by a variety of different issues. A podiatrist will perform an examination to determine the root cause and develop a treatment plan.

4. A reoccurring case of athlete’s foot. It’s one of the most common fungal infections out there, and it can generally be treated with over the counter creams or sprays. But if athlete’s foot keeps coming back, a podiatrist can treat with more effective creams and check for possible infection.

5. An ingrown toenail. You may be tempted to try and remove a painful ingrown toenail on your own, but it’s safer (and less painful) to have it removed by a podiatrist. A podiatrist can provide medication if the nail has become infected and numb the area during the removal process.

6. Painful corns or calluses. The result of thickened areas of dead skin, these common problems can become painful if the skin becomes too thick. A podiatrist can remove areas of the hardened skin to alleviate the pain.

Why moisturise your feet? 💦🦶🏼

Neglecting your feet can lead to unnecessary pain and problems that could have been avoided by some simple practices that you can do yourself in the comfort of your home. 🏡

Moistiourising your feet daily can help prevent hard pressure points and cracked heels, breaks and cuts which if left untreated can lead to viral, bacterial or fungal infections which can be difficult to eradicate. 😫

Summer is the time of year when your skin is at its driest, meaning the oily layer that protects your feet from microbial entry is compromised. This loss of moisture also effects the elasticity of your skin making it vulnerable to cracks under the pressure of walking. ☀️

Our aim at Stephanie Jarvis Podiatry is to keep your feet as healthy so here are some top tips if you have dry feet:

🧦- wear socks. Bare skin will dry out much quicker

🧼 - avoid using soap on your feet where possible. Although you may feel they are freshening up your feet, the detergent will be washing away your feet’s natural oily protective layer. Use a wet flannel to wipe down your feet at the end of your bath/shower

🧴- moisturise your feet regularly. Using a specialist foot moisturiser little and often with at least 10% Urea such as Ureka will help promote the regeneration of soft skin.

👩🏻‍💼- Visit Stephanie Jarvis Podiatry… if you need more help then it’s our job to keep your feet healthy 🙌🏻

Post exercise sore feet? 😩👣

One of the reasons many people stop exercising is the result of sore feet. This can be due to superficial skin changes or maybe a strain on the muscles and joints in your foot.

Some of the most common complaints we see are blisters, corns and callous. These are usually caused by:

👟 ill fitting shoes
🧦 wrinkled socks
💦 excessive moisture

Treating Blisters:

In most cases blisters will heal naturally, the body reabsorbs the fluid and the blister will dry and peel off. The skin forms a natural defence against infection so you shouldn’t pierce the blister. You can cover a blister with an adhesive dressing or gauze. If the blister is causing you pain, cover the area with a soft dressing and change the dressing daily. Once the blister bursts refrain from peeling the skin and cover the exposed skin with a dressing.

Treating callus and corns:

Callus and corns take a longer period of time to form and do protect underlying tissue to a certain point. If they cause you pain, you should seek advice from a podiatrist who will be able to help you with the care and management of the skin lesion.

Choosing the right footwear 👟👠🥾

Wearing properly fitted shoes is the most effectivel way to keep your feet healthy. Did you know that your feet can expand during the day by up to half a size! 👣 Another common mistake when choosing footwear is not the shoe itself but the socks… so make sure the socks you wear when trying your shoes for the first time reflect the socks you will actually wear with that shoe.

Style vs Substance? Do you talk yourself into a shoe just becuase it looks good? We spend a great deal of time on our feet so try to choose a shoe that is comfortable with an appropriate level of support.

So our top tips to choose the right shoe are:

🩰 make sure they’re the right size by trying on several pairs

🧦 make sure you have the right socks on

🥿🥿 don’t just try one on, if they’re for you, try two!

👠🥾 they may look good but try not to compromise comfort

Do you do 150 minutes of moderately intense activity a week? 🚶🏻‍♀️🚴🏼‍♂️💃

Did you know that’s the recommended amount of weekly exercise for a UK adult according to the NHS?

This can be a brisk walk, riding a bike, dancing or even hoovering the house!

Walking is a great way to improve both your physical and mental fitness. It can help reduces stress levels, improve your mood and even improve your memory. Walking can also improve the function of your heart and lungs, enabling the body to level out blood sugars and overall improve your quality of life.

If you are walking to improve your general health then aim for approximately 30 minutes a day. This will not only improve your cardiovascular fitness but will aid weight loss, help create better eating habits and improves your physical health and mental wellbeing.

Many lower limbs problems can be attributed to health, diet and poor circulation… so without wanting to put ourselves out of a job, a walk a day could keep the podiatrist away!

We often get asked… “What is a Podiatrist?” 👩🏻‍🎓🦶🏼

If you’re familiar with chiropody then you’re not far off.

The primary aim of a Podiatrist is to improve the mobility, independence and quality of life of their patients by providing prevention and diagnosis of foot, ankle and leg problems and providing any treatment that might be required.

Podiatrists are degree level, highly skilled professionals, regulated by the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC). This ensures every qualified podiatrist in the UK is a registered health care professional, meeting the standards set by the HCPC.
