🦭 Spot the Seal! πŸ‘€

Seals love to haul out (rest) on all sorts of unusual places β€” from quiet beaches to… rusty old piers like this one!

Hauling out is completely normal behaviour, it’s how seals rest, digest their food, warm up, and take a break from life at sea. Young pups may seek shelter while waiting on their mother, too.

Though in cases like this, the seal may have to wait for the tide to come back! πŸ’™

We couldn’t resist sharing this creative choice of nap spot! Can you spot the seal? πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ

πŸŽƒ THE SOLDIERS OF BLYTH BATTERY πŸ‘»

Blyth Battery, on the Northumberland coast, is thought to be haunted by 9 British soldiers who unfortunately drowned here in the First World War!

It is thought that the wooden 'wall' you can see on the beach, to the right of the southern battery gun, is where old WWI soldiers have been seen on occasions filling sand bags and then mysteriously disappear!

So what actually happened!! Well on a hot August day in 1917 (24th) over 600 soldiers of the Royal Warwickshire/ Regiment were on a route march from Horton Camp.

They stopped to rest on Blyth beach and were given permission to cool off in the water. Many had never seen the sea and some could not swim.

Tragically no-one understood the strong undercurrents of an ebb tide and very quickly some of the men got into difficulties. Others went to their aid and also floundered.

Lieutenant Brown organised human chains to attempt a rescue and seven soldiers were saved while eight were swept out to sea.
Sadly Lt Brown lost his footing and despite efforts to hold onto him he too was drowned and was thought to have been found next to this wooden structure!

If you visit the Battery you can see the blue plaque in memory of this event!

Lives unfortunately lost:
Beavon, George Edward Blunn
Jesse Brown
Edmund Kenneth Wallace Fortey
Thomas Henderson
William Harry Noy
Edward Gordon Riled
John Shale
Fred Southern
