I’ve been embracing my favourite season as we head into the darker days …if you struggle with this read on ….. 🫶
Wintering is a concept that refers to embracing periods of rest, introspection, and emotional processing—particularly during the winter months. Rather than seeing these times as failures or stagnation, wintering invites us to pause and rebuild, just as nature slows down in winter to regenerate.
Wintering involves withdrawing from or adapting normal routines when needed, being gentle with yourself, and letting go of always being busy. It is about recognizing natural emotional cycles, allowing space for healing and personal growth, and preparing for future renewal.
HOW TO PRACTICE WINTERING
Practicing wintering often means intentionally building periods of rest and reflection into your life:
• Allow yourself time away from social pressures and expectations.
• Engage in activities that support healing and recalibration, such as journaling, meditation, gentle movement, and connecting with nature.
• Use winter as a time to restore energy and prepare emotionally for renewed activity when you’re ready.
• Notice and honor how your mind and body respond to seasonal changes, leading to self-acceptance instead of self-criticism.
Massage can offer powerful support during a wintering period:
• Mood Elevation and Stress Relief: Massage has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (stress hormone) and increase oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins, which improve mood and well-being—great for the winter blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder.
• Boosting Immune Function: Regular massage stimulates the lymphatic system, increasing white blood cell activity and supporting the immune system to fight winter illnesses more effectively.
• Physical Comfort and Warmth: Massage improves circulation, helping relieve tense muscles and joint stiffness that are common in cold weather.
• Skin and Sleep support: Massage hydrates dry winter skin and encourages deeper, more restorative sleep - which our bodies generally require more of in the winter months.
• Holistic Therapies: Practices such as reiki support emotional processing, and enhance your body’s innate ability to heal during wintering.
By embracing wintering and using massage and holistic therapies, you can transform a challenging season into an opportunity for emotional growth, physical health, and of course, relaxing!
Scheduling regular massage helps ensure you take time for yourself, relax and rejuvenate.
