Bedsharing can be done in a way that is much safer than what’s shown here.
I always recommend that pregnant and expecting parents familiarise themselves with safe bedsharing guidance – even if they don’t plan to do it. The reality is many people accidentally fall asleep with their baby, I did with both of mine. (Check Lullaby Trust - Co-Sleeping More Safely)
A friend recently showed me a product they were considering and while the Lullaby Trust does not recommend sleep pods, what concerned me most were the pictures in the advert.
Here’s why:
1. Back to sleep – Babies should always be placed on their backs. The advert showed a baby on its tummy. Since the 1990s, this advice has dramatically reduced the risk of SIDS worldwide.
2. Not a “co-sleeping essential” – Sleep pods are not recommended and can increase risk. For safer bedsharing, the sleep space should be clear of pillows and adult bedding.
3. Clear sleep space – No toys or extras in the bed.
4. Firm, flat surface – Babies should sleep on a firm, flat, waterproof mattress. This advert claimed “soft for the spine”…
✨ The takeaway? Some sleep products can be brilliant – I love continuous white noise machines and portable dimmable lights.
But especially when it comes to newborn sleep, always double-check advice with a trusted source like the Lullaby Trust or NHS.
🌍 Recommendations vary between countries – the above is UK guidance.
