Today I’m sharing something significant for long-term skin health, inflammation control, and overall well-being: my own Zinzino Balance Test results.

I’m currently sitting at a balanced 2.5:1 Omega-6:3 ratio with a 92% Protection Value, which means my cell membranes are fluid, protected, and functioning exactly as they should. But here’s why this really matters.

When your Omega-6:3 ratio is high (which it is for most people in the UK), your body is in a chronic inflammatory state. This directly affects (but not limited to):

What do you think this is? Well, it's Tallow! You've probably seen it circulating on social media lately.

Tallow, a type of rendered animal fat (usually beef or lamb), has resurfaced in some “natural” skincare products, often marketed as resembling human sebum (oil). While this sounds appealing, the reality is more complex. The way tallow behaves on the skin depends entirely on how it’s refined, stabilised, and formulated.

In professionally developed skincare, tallow may occasionally be included in small, stabilised amounts within a more expansive lipid complex. When combined with antioxidants, ceramides, or plant oils, it may help support hydration in very dry or compromised skin. However, even when purified, tallow remains dense and occlusive. For many skin types, particularly those with oily, acne-prone, reactive or sensitive skin, this can lead to congestion, imbalance, or disruption of the skin barrier.

Another concern is stability. Animal fats oxidise more quickly than plant or synthetic lipids, and when they do, they produce by-products that may irritate the skin or trigger inflammation. While some brands use stabilisers to prevent this, not all tallow-based formulations undergo the same rigorous testing or stability validation.

From a clinical perspective (mine!), there are now far more effective and skin-compatible alternatives available. Ingredients such as ceramides, squalane, and phospholipids provide superior nourishment, stability, and barrier repair, without the risk of congestion, irritation, or oxidation.

Tallow may have historical roots, but modern skin science has evolved far beyond it. For healthy, resilient, and balanced skin, formulations that work in harmony with your natural lipid barrier are the safest and most effective choice.

This lovely client came to me with scar tissue, redness, persistent cystic acne issues and uneven texture around the chin. This area is among the hardest to rebuild due to constant movement and residual inflammation.

These are both images of my skin, taken with my skin analysis machine, with no creams or makeup.

The first is taken in standard daylight mode, which most people would notice when they look in the mirror.
The second is captured using negative polarised light, a setting on my skin analysis device that reveals what is happening beneath the surface.
