"Whilst hospitals, A&E departments and ambulance handovers are showing how much pressure there is at the NHS front door, these numbers are the consequence of mounting pressures across all parts of the system, including pressures in primary care and social care."

"These are challenging times for the whole of the NHS as staff work flat out to tackle backlogs in patient care in the face of continuing COVID-19 pressures and growing demand for health services. But many of the problems we're facing now predate the pandemic."

An interesting read here on how workforce shortages are impacting NHS services.

"It is particularly worrying that nearly half of NHS staff now report that in the past 12 months they have felt unwell as a result of work-related stress. In addition, one-third of NHS staff now report often or always feeling burnt out. This is not just inefficient and damaging for staff, it has consequences for patients, as stressed and unwell staff are less able to deliver high-quality, safe care."

In this article, Suzie Bailey, Director of Leadership and Organisational Development at The King's Fund, comments on the recent NHS Staff Survey results.

"Workforce shortages are already having a direct impact on patient care and staff experience. Urgent action is now required to avoid a vicious cycle of growing shortages and declining quality."

In this joint report with the Nuffield Trust and the Health Foundation, The King's Fund set out a series of policy actions that, evidence suggests, should be at the heart of the workforce implementation plan.

"Long term workforce challenges must be addressed by governments if we are to reduce waiting times and have a health and care service the public deserves - and that politicians continue to promise."

According to the 2021 NHS staff survey, morale in NHS England is declining, and almost a third often think about leaving the organisation.

Asked about their workload and resources, just 43% feel able to meet all demands on their time at work – a five-year low – and 27% say there are enough staff at their organisation to do their job correctly, compared with over 38% last year.

With pressures and understaffing leading to increased strain on the NHS, there is now high demand for support, investments and a clear workforce plan.

In this article, Danny Mortimer explains that while the NHS is still experiencing major staff shortages, health service leaders and their teams will be working hard to tackle the enormous backlog of non-COVID-19 care over the weeks, months and years to come.

The NHS went into the pandemic with 90,000 staff vacancies and has lost a further 9,000 since then. Despite this immense pressure on staff, they have continued to deliver for patients. While NHS leaders are prioritising addressing delays in care, they also know that supporting their workforce must be at the heart of what they do. This includes efforts to improve productivity as well as carefully managed international recruitment.

An interesting article from Lord Victor Adebowale that discusses the full value of partnership working with the voluntary sector in order to achieve integrated care.

A study by Durham University showed that the VCSE sector contributes an estimated economic and social value of £4.2 billion in just one region of England. Social enterprises alone provide over 30% of community services, including making public sector savings and building stronger communities.

This article argues that ICSs must embrace the VCSE sector, treating them as key partners in decision-making and governance structures in order to successfully deliver health and care services.

Recent reports and guidance show how integral the voluntary sector is to achieving integrated care in health and care services.

At the end of last year, the Health Secretary announced plans to merge Health Education England (HEE), NHSX and NHS Digital into the NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE/I) organisation.

The changes are intended to allow for wide-reaching improvements across the health service, as well as the reorganisation of a number of objectives of the NHS into a more central footing.

Crucially, one of the main aims of these plans is to “place recruitment, training and retention of NHS staff at the heart” of healthcare in England.

This will be done by shifting HEE resources into NHSE/I and by bringing into this organisation the remits of organisations like NHS Digital and NHSX too. This will give these staff recruitment, retention and training efforts access to data and technological capabilities which will boost success rates.

The number of unfilled posts across health services in England has risen to 110,192, according to NHS Digital. This includes 39,652 nurses and 8,158 doctors.

The shortage of frontline personnel is expected to lead to longer delays in treatment and care.

Staff groups say that low pay, heavy workloads and constant pressure during shifts are leading workers to quit.
