Somebody recently asked me is Sports massage the same as Physiotherapy? The answer is no. Physiotherapy is more complex and has a more in depth approach to rehabilitation of injuries. It may involve some massage but a sports massage therapist generally manipulates muscle tissues and tendons using deep massage techniques to help aid the healing of injuries. It can also help people to recover faster from a major sports or athletic event or just a heavy training session. The friction and movement of the therapists hands helps to increase blood flow to damaged and healing tissues and can help to eliminate knots and tightness in muscle groups. For example if you break your arm and your arm is put into plaster or a sling and remains immobile for weeks or months, the surrounding tissues will likely weaken, adhesions between tissues can develop, causing stiffness in the muscles. Once the fracture has healed, regular sports massage treatment is likely to help overcome any impingment in the limb along with daily exercises of the arm.
