Thank you so much to The College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy for asking me to present a case at their Spring conference in London last Saturday ๐ŸŒฟ

A chamomile - Matricaria chamomilla - tea infusion used as a nasal rinse over 3 months eliminated Stage 3 nasal polyps and the need for polypectomy, bringing relief and healing to my patient and his partner as his breathing and sleep improved and his airways cleared. Thank you to them for their consent in sharing the case and their belief in the power of herbal medicine ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฟ

The CPP conference was a wonderful day immersed in the power of herbal teas and the company of inspirational like minded folk. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฟ

If you have been to the herb garden at Higher Nurture you will know that my Dad has been a huge influence and help to me as a gardener.

From my first terraced house in Leeds when I was 19, my Dad has worked tirelessly to help me create a welcoming green space to catch a moment of sunshine in amongst the birdsong.

Although we didnโ€™t always agree on his love of tidy bare soil and my more relaxed approach to wild edges, he has been an incredible help in bringing plans to life and looking after the garden here at Higher Nurture.

Iโ€™ve learned how to be a grower by his side and the value of hard work and determination. I will be eternally grateful for his wisdom, good humour and generosity.

Spending time in the garden now allowing the quiet pottering and the gentle energies of the plants and birdsong surround me is helping to hold me in grief. I feel very lucky to have had my Dad as a guide and friend, and this space to feel close to him now he has gone.

Thank you so much, Dad. You are much missed ###

We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day for a herb gardening guide day this week ๐ŸŒฟโ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ

Following on from the her garden design presentation last week, the Horsemanship for Health team joined me at Higher Nurture To find out how to plant out and look after the garden.

So good to get our hands in the soil!

I spent a wonderful weekend with an amazing group of Betonica 4 students teaching clinical skills, helping them to hone their training and prepare for their final clinical exams.

Like all of their Betonica year group, their curiosity and attention to detail is a testament to their hard work and dedication to their training to become medical herbalists.

As medical herbalists we are trained in the same diagnostic skills as GPs using the evidence we find to treat and resolve the root cause of ill health with herbal medicine.

This means that we can carry out respiratory, abdominal, cardiovascular and neurological examinations to help us diagnose and provide the herbal medicine you need.

Our treatment plans often work alongside conventional prescribed medicines and care, and we support our patients to access any testing and treatment needed alongside herbal medicine.

The training is rigorous and demanding as it should be, and Betonica takes pride in training medical herbalists to the highest standard.

This year 4 cohort will soon be entering their chosen career paths in herbal medicine and our world will be much richer for it. Very best of luck to them all in the months ahead, and beyond.

This week I was invited to Horsemanship for Health to present my community herb garden design to create a space to feel held and at peace in amongst the buzz of pollinators and nature ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฟ

Horsemanship for Health supports mental health through connection in collaboration with the NHS.

The location is nestled in the Stokeinteignhead valley and provides sheltered warmth and almost flat ground - the perfect spot to welcome people to connect and reconnect.

The design for the garden builds on this by using curving living walls and pathways to guide visitors through a sensory trail whilst encouraging exploration of the plants and providing seated areas in which to feel held.

The mixed planting draws on herbal medicine to support the nervous system whilst providing nectar and seed heads for insect hiding places.

In time it is hoped that visitors will enjoy herbal teas, wildlife watching and workshop in the space. Exciting times ahead!

The project continues next week with a herb growing workshop, followed by a herbal therapeutics and tea tasting workshop with the HMH team.
๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฟ

Thank you so much to Belinda and the HMH volunteers for inviting me to take part in this collaborative project. I feel very proud to be part of creating this space that will hopefully bring healing and opportunity in equal measure.

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฟ

It was a real pleasure to meet you all and spend an evening sharing the power of hedgerow medicine.
๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฟ

Lots of lovely folk braved the torrential rain to taste teas and learn how to identify some Spring herbal allies.
