My name is Kelly and I'm a PhD student at the University of Bristol researching the folklore of prehistoric monuments. I'd like to enquire whether anyone's come across the name 'the devil's tinderbox' in Stonehouse please? I found a reference to it in Jeremy Harte's Cuckoo Pounds and Singing Barrows which concerns folklore in Dorset, but he includes this site in Stonehouse amongst others across the country with the 'devil' moniker, frustratingly, with no reference to indicate his source. These sites are often prehistoric monuments, large stones, small hills, rocky outcrops or hollows, but despite being born and bred in Ebley with a strong family history in the area, I and no one else I've spoken to has ever heard of this name!

I am familiar with the prehistoric monuments in the wider area but have not come across this name in any of my research connected to Hetty Pegler's or Nymspfield Long Barrow. Can anyone help with this please thank you
