So proud to be a part of this amazing campaign!
“I was diagnosed with primary breast cancer in 2016, and went through my treatment before heading on the road in my van thinking, ‘I’m cancer free!’
“I had a bit of a scare in 2019 where I had pain in my ribs and got a glimpse into secondary breast cancer life, then two weeks later was told this was just radiotherapy damage.
“Then in 2021, I had a similar feeling further round in my ribs. My oncologist ordered CT and bone scans and rang me the same day. That’s when he said it was secondary breast cancer.
“We had big plans. We built this horsebox while I was going through my primary treatment and were going to head off and go across Europe to wherever we could. We were in the process of selling the house, had got rid of lots of furniture – and then the news came that it was secondary breast cancer.
“So then I knew I had to stay on regular treatment – that curbed our travels quite a bit. We just have to keep thinking of things in 3-week loops at the moment.
“One thing that has shocked me is that people don’t know the signs and symptoms of secondary breast cancer. I think it’s also important that people know that while secondary breast cancer is incurable, it is treatable.
“If I had more time, I certainly would be travelling further afield.”
Rachel and her husband had big plans to travel across Europe in her van when she was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer. She’s determined to make the most of her time between treatment cycles, travelling across the UK and attending festivals.
That’s why we fund research dedicated to giving those living with the disease more time to live their lives to the fullest.
