Why is tidying a challenge for AuDHD people?
For individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AuDHD), tidying can be particularly challenging due to several factors:
- Executive Function Challenges: AuDHD can affect working memory, planning, and organization skills, making it hard to initiate and maintain tidying tasks.
- Difficulty with Task Initiation: Starting a tidying task can be overwhelming, leading to procrastination or avoidance.
- Sensory Sensitivities: Certain textures, sights, or smells associated with clutter can be overwhelming or distracting.
- Object Permanence Issues: Some people with AuDHD might struggle with object permanence, where out-of-sight items are out of mind, making it hard to keep track of belongings.
- Prioritization and Decision-Making: Deciding what to keep, donate, or discard can be overwhelming, leading to "doom piles" or rearranged messes.
These challenges don't mean AuDHD people can't tidy or be organized; they might just need to approach tasks differently.
