Buzzing after another free antenatal breastfeeding group this morning in Sutton. I'm taking a break from these groups until the New Year.

Breastfeeding is natural. But it's not natural like breathing; it's natural like walking (not sure who first said this, but I wholeheartedly agree!). 10-15 mins of info in a birth prep class isn't enough.

If breastfeeding is going well, midwives and health visitors can provide reassurance and support with small challenges.

If you're having difficulties with breastfeeding, reach out to the infant feeding team (there's one in the hospital and one linked with your health visiting team).

If infant feeding team support isn't enough, reach out to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) like me.

In my experience, most breastfeeding difficulties can be overcome (sometimes not, but that is more rare) with the right level of support provided at the right time.

Here's how I teach laid-back breastfeeding, where baby attaches to the breast themselves.

Give it a try and let me know how you get on!

If you are lactating/breastfeeding and you become unwell, I suggest any advice you're given by a healthcare professional should be double checked with someone with a breastfeeding support credential. If the person advising you does not have a breastfeeding support credential (e.g. breastfeeding peer supporter, breastfeeding counsellor, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Breastfeeding Medicine doctor - yes, this is a thing!), the advice they are giving could very well be outdated or wrong. Mismanaging breast inflammation or ni**le pain prolongs suffering and can lead to serious complications. To be on the safe side, check with your local NHS infant feeding coordinator or lactation consultant IBCLC.

Babies know what's good for them. They think they are part of you (the birthing parent). If they aren't touching you they will probably start to squirm. Not a design flaw. The two of you staying in body contact most of the time (making sure we're following safer sleep guidance) is what's best for them and for your milk production. Babies are so smart.

I'm going to start coming on to my socials more and talking about breastfeeding stuff. Episode 1: why aren't antenatal classes teaching parents that babies can latch themselves with little or no help?

Got a question or topic you'd like me to talk about? Pop it in the comments.

Till next time!

Andrea

πŸ’‘Did you know there are breastfeeding podcasts? Here are three of my favourites

🎧The Badass Breastfeeding Podcast
Informative and entertaining in equal measure, with extra points for frequently blasting the patriarchy and capitalism. Love The Badass Breastfeeder

🎧Makes Milk with Emma Pickett
One of the UK's best known lactation consultant IBCLCs in conversation with parents about their breastfeeding journeys or with other legends in the field of infant feeding. Just really really good.

🎧 Breastfeeding Matters
This is one of my newer finds, and another great listen for topics related to breastfeeding.

Each of these are (co-) hosted by IBCLCs so you can trust the information shared.

Local to me in Sutton? Book on to my free antenatal breastfeeding group (monthly in a Saturday morning in Trinco Restaurant in Oru Sutton) and have a conversation with a real-life lactation consultant IBCLC, the scrum half of the breastfeeding support rugby team.

Next groups: Saturday Nov 8th, Saturday Dec 6th

We won! The NHS infant feeding team I'm on has won the Patient Award 2025 at this year's Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust Staff Awards. This is the only award where nominations are made by service users, not by fellow staff. I am absolutely buzzing. THANK YOU to everyone who nominated us.

How can your partner help you breastfeed? (This goes for whoever is with you at home in those early weeks)

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Learn as much about breastfeeding as possible Be chief nappy changer
πŸ‘‰πŸ» Bathe baby
πŸ‘‰πŸ» Cuddle baby after feeds
πŸ‘‰πŸ» Wear baby in a carrier (babies who are held more cry less)
πŸ‘‰πŸ» Provide easy food for you
πŸ‘‰πŸ» Bringing you a drink
(Cook, clean, do laundry, write thank you notes, arrange appointments, correspond with folks who want to come visit, etc)

All those cuddles will promote a lovely bond between baby and that key person in your life. My favourite resource for partners/grandparents is the FREE online course Team Baby from the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers
