Yesterday at the Breastfeeding Network Lambeth Study Day Breastfeeding Specialist Midwife Shaheda Yasmeen- Khan .shaheda gave really good talk on milk kinship. Milk kinship is where children who've been breastfed by, or consumed breastmilk from, the same woman may become milk siblings and be unable to later marry one another. Details for any given family depend on the interpretation of the Islamic teaching on this point that the family follows. The Human Milk Foundation has a useful guide on this that includes links to the four different interpretations of Islamic teaching on the subject.

Thank you Shaheda for highlighting this topic!

Spent a wonderful day today at the Breastfeeding Network Lambeth Study Day: connecting with old friends, putting faces to names and meeting some new folks and listening to incredible speakers. Over the next few days I'll post some of the things I learned!

I'm taking some time off and will be back Jan 5th.

☎️Options for support over the holidays include the National Breastfeeding Helpline that is available 24 hours a day every single day of the year and is staffed by trained volunteers. 0300 100 0212

❄️If you develop mild breast inflammation, perhaps due to a change to your normal feeding pattern, apply cool compresses to the breast between feeds (and try to resume your normal pattern of milk removal as much as possible) and you should feel better really soon.

Take care, and see you in January,

Andrea

Buzzing after another free antenatal breastfeeding group this morning in Sutton. I'm taking a break from these groups until the New Year.

Breastfeeding is natural. But it's not natural like breathing; it's natural like walking (not sure who first said this, but I wholeheartedly agree!). 10-15 mins of info in a birth prep class isn't enough.

If breastfeeding is going well, midwives and health visitors can provide reassurance and support with small challenges.

If you're having difficulties with breastfeeding, reach out to the infant feeding team (there's one in the hospital and one linked with your health visiting team).

If infant feeding team support isn't enough, reach out to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) like me.

In my experience, most breastfeeding difficulties can be overcome (sometimes not, but that is more rare) with the right level of support provided at the right time.

Here's how I teach laid-back breastfeeding, where baby attaches to the breast themselves.

Give it a try and let me know how you get on!

If you are lactating/breastfeeding and you become unwell, I suggest any advice you're given by a healthcare professional should be double checked with someone with a breastfeeding support credential. If the person advising you does not have a breastfeeding support credential (e.g. breastfeeding peer supporter, breastfeeding counsellor, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Breastfeeding Medicine doctor - yes, this is a thing!), the advice they are giving could very well be outdated or wrong. Mismanaging breast inflammation or ni**le pain prolongs suffering and can lead to serious complications. To be on the safe side, check with your local NHS infant feeding coordinator or lactation consultant IBCLC.

Babies know what's good for them. They think they are part of you (the birthing parent). If they aren't touching you they will probably start to squirm. Not a design flaw. The two of you staying in body contact most of the time (making sure we're following safer sleep guidance) is what's best for them and for your milk production. Babies are so smart.

I'm going to start coming on to my socials more and talking about breastfeeding stuff. Episode 1: why aren't antenatal classes teaching parents that babies can latch themselves with little or no help?

Got a question or topic you'd like me to talk about? Pop it in the comments.

Till next time!

Andrea
