Asbestos Awareness Week!

This Asbestos Awareness Week, we’re reminding clients and project teams that asbestos is still a real and often HIDDEN RISK across many buildings. We help ensure asbestos is properly identified, managed and controlled keeping people safe and projects compliant. Awareness saves lives. Let’s keep it front of mind.

Are construction risks really born on site or long before a shovel ever hits the ground?!

“Many construction risks don’t start on site they start on the drawing board.
That’s why true Principal Designer excellence goes far beyond compliance.
It’s about designing out risk before it ever reaches the ground, small design changes can have
huge safety benefits"

What does an outsourced Health & Safety department really do? More than most people think! "Good built in safety feels invisible" as your outsourced department we create bespoke H&S management systems ensuring compliance and safety in all areas.

For many organisations, managing Health & Safety in-house is time-consuming, costly, and often overwhelming. That’s where an outsourced H&S department steps in giving you an entire team of specialists for a fraction of the cost of a single hire.

✅ Audits & gap analyses
✅ Tailored compliance documents
✅ Full ISO‑ready bespoke H&S management systems
✅ Fire risk assessments & site inspections
✅ Annual audits to keep you compliant

If you want expert support, improved safety, and less stress… outsourcing might be the smartest move you make this year.

The Principal Designer role is now a fixture on most projects, BUT are we really using it to its full potential? Too often, the role becomes administrative: meetings, actions, registers, documents. All necessary, but not the real value!

Design today is more interconnected than ever. Fire strategy, energy performance, ventilation, overheating, accessibility — none of these sit in isolation. Change one, and the others move with it. That’s where strong Principal Designer leadership makes the difference. Not by adding more paperwork, but by helping teams understand risks earlier, make better decisions, and avoid costly redesign later.

Let's explore what “good” looks like in practice and why the conversation shouldn’t be about whether you have a Principal Designer, but whether you’re enabling them to lead.

"Better safety doesn’t come from thicker manuals. It comes from better conversations!"

A quick, informal chat with the team on the ground can change behaviour more than any policy. Make toolbox talks specific, relevant and open — when people feel involved, they take responsibility.

That’s exactly how we work at The Safety Department. We remove friction, reduce risk and help projects run right first time. Every action is intentional and focused on preventing issues downstream.

In the last month we’ve supported clients on major infrastructure work, higher risk building projects and factory facilities to achieve ISO certification and enhance their safety management systems.

Women in Construction Week is a moment to recognise the impact women are having across the built‑environment sector and to acknowledge the progress still being made. The APS highlights how women are increasingly shaping health, safety, design risk management, and project delivery bringing diverse perspectives that lead to better decisions and safer outcomes: https://www.aps.org.uk/news-post/women-construction-week

More women are entering construction, stepping into leadership roles, and influencing how projects are designed, managed, and delivered. Their contribution strengthens teams, raises professional standards, and helps create environments that work for everyone.

We see every day how inclusive teams lead to stronger safety cultures and better project outcomes. When women are part of the conversation — in design, planning, and on site — risk is understood more broadly, decisions improve, and workplaces become safer and more effective for all.

This week is a chance to celebrate the women who build, design, manage, and influence our industry and to keep pushing for a sector where everyone has the opportunity to progress with confidence!

What aspect of Women in Construction Week resonates most with your team right now?

Most projects still treat the Principal Designer as a paperwork role. That mindset is outdated and it’s holding safety back!

The projects improving fastest are doing one thing differently, they combine CDM safety with Building Regulations compliance, not split across silos, not reviewed too late, not reacting after problems appear.

What works (and why):

✅ The Principal Designer leads early, influencing design before risk is built in.
✅ CDM hazards and BR compliance reviewed together, one coordinated approach, no gaps.
✅ Aligned risk registers + compliance strategies not competing documents.
✅ Clear, unified direction for designers fewer contradictions and late‑stage fixes.
✅ Construction risks reduce issues removed at concept stage, not on site.

The impact:

Safer projects
Fewer redesigns
Fewer site surprises
Better outcomes for everyone
A more efficient, proactive design process

This isn’t more work, it’s smarter work. The combined CDM + BR Principal Designer model is quickly becoming the most effective route to real safety improvement.

Ai in Safety - Invisibility vs Accountability - "Good Built in Safety Feels Invisible" - Laurence Davis

Explore the growing role of AI in health and safety—and why the best safety systems are often the ones no one notices. From construction sites to complex projects, built‑in safety measures work quietly in the background, preventing incidents long before they become visible!

But that creates a challenge:
👉 If good safety feels invisible, how do we maintain accountability?

🚧 Competence: More Than a Certificate - Qualified does not always mean competent!

In construction, most failures don’t happen because someone wasn’t trained…They happen because everyone assumed someone was competent. Certificates matter — but they don’t prove someone can apply knowledge safely, consistently, or under pressure.

Strong construction safety culture comes from:
✔️ Verified capability
✔️ Real‑world assessment
✔️ Confident supervision
✔️ Leadership that sets the tone

When competence is treated as a living standard — observed, tested and reinforced — safety stops being a tick‑box exercise and becomes the way work is done.

If your assurance relies solely on certificates, you may not have a competence system at all.

Most construction failures do not occur because people were not trained—they occur because competence was assumed. Although competence is referenced throughout UK health and safety law, from the Health and Safety at Work Act to the CDM Regulations, it remains one of the sector’s most misundersto...

🎥 From the Battlefield to the Building Site! — My Journey to Leading a Safety Consultancy

Leaving home at 16 to join the British Army, I never imagined that the lessons learned as a young sapper would eventually lead me to build and run a health and safety consultancy.

In this video interview thanks to Scott Bond from Wild Oak Solutions I share a part of my story. If you’ve ever wondered how military experience translates into construction safety…👉 This one’s worth a watch!
