๐Ÿ—๏ธ As Careers Week comes to an end, we're celebrating the incredible people who make McPhillips what it is.

Did you know that more than 20% of our team started their journey with us as apprentices? Or that 48 of our colleagues have been with us for 25 years or more?

We're proud to show that a career in construction really can be a career for life. Our apprenticeship programme, run with Telford College , has helped so many people grow from trainees into senior roles.

If you know a young person who's weighing up their options, tell them to take a look at construction. The opportunities are genuinely limitless.

Weโ€™re proud to recognise two of McPhillipsโ€™ longest-serving colleagues Matt Crowther and Michael Oliver who have each completed 25 years with us.

They were presented with engraved watches by the directors in recognition of their quarter-century of commitment. Matt (gateman) and Michael (foreman) have helped shape our growth and culture for more than two decades.

Their loyalty and dedication over 25 years is exceptional and testament to their professionalism and work ethic.

Thank you both, here's to many more years! ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ—๏ธ To mark Women in Construction Week and Careers Week, we're shining a light on the work our team is doing to open up our industry to a more diverse and talented future workforce.

Recently, our social value coordinator Emily Myatt and colleagues Dan Redmond, contracts manager, and Andy Sykes, site manager, spent two days at George Eliot Academy in Nuneaton talking to approximately 300 students about careers in construction and civil engineering and helping them to discover the transferable skills they already have.

As part of our commitment as a Marches Careers Hub Cornerstone Employer we did something very similar at Idsall School in Shifnal and if that's not enough our SHEQ manager Stuart Bishop and other members of the team have been busy attending careers events at both Telford College , Shrewsbury College and NMITE in Hereford over the last couple of months.

The roadshow continues this week with a trip to the Warwickshire Skills Show, Ercall Wood Academy , Madeley Academy Sixth Form and a return to Telford College so if you see us about, come and say hello.

We always love seeing new residents enjoying their homes, especially ones created by us, and the giraffes and zebras at Chester Zoo are no exception!

Our team redeveloped eight acres of existing animal habitats to create a stunning new African savannah and it looks like we've got an official seal of approval from the giraffes! ๐Ÿฆ’

This week we've celebrated some of the brilliant apprentices here at McPhillips. ๐Ÿ‘ท

From first-years just starting out, to those progressing into leadership roles.

But what really matters is the commitment we make to them. ๐Ÿ’ช

Stuart Bishop, our SHEQ manager who oversees the apprenticeship scheme, sums it up:

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ "We have a good, ongoing collaboration with Telford College. We're able to provide direct feedback to college staff, so that our apprentices receive site-specific mentoring to bridge gaps between classroom learning and site realities."

"We value apprentices who stand out by demonstrating commitment and skill. These are the individuals who often progress to site management or other leadership roles. The more they're invested in their apprenticeship, the more likely they are to successfully progress into long-term construction careers."

That's what sets our scheme apart. It's genuine investment in people's futures.

๐Ÿ‘ท Apprentice Spotlight: Tom Floyd

Tom completed his NVQ Level 2 in Construction Operative back in 2024 and hasn't stopped learning since. Now 21, he's been with us for almost four years and has worked on loads of different projects.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ "I'm currently working on our Coventry project, installing a clean water pipe for Severn Trent," says Tom. "I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship in construction โ€“ it's a really good way to start your career."

Since completing his apprenticeship, Tom has taken numerous courses including confined spaces, First Aid Level 3, slinger/signaller training and ride on roller certifications. He's now completing his SSSTS supervisor course in March โ€“ a huge milestone he's been working towards.

๐Ÿ‘ท Apprentice Spotlight: Ollie Fudge

Ollie completed the classroom part of his apprenticeship in December and is now putting everything he's learned into practice on site.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ "I enjoyed the college side of things โ€“ it was a great stepping stone between school and work." says Ollie.

But for Ollie, the real learning happens on site. "As an apprentice, you're also learning when you're out on site while earning money at the same time, which you wouldn't if you were at college full time."

"I'd recommend it as a way into construction, definitely."

His End Point Assessment covered everything from block paving and slabbing through to drainage and concrete. Ollie started his apprenticeship in September 2024 and is studying NVQ Level 2 in Construction Operative at Telford College.

๐Ÿ‘ท Apprentice Spotlight: Jaydee O'Neill

Jaydee started his apprenticeship with us in September 2025, and at just 17, he's already working on real projects and learning so much!

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ "As an apprentice, you get so much more practical experience than you would if you did a full-time construction course at college, because you're out on site with a gang for a lot of the time," says Jaydee.

"You're also getting paid to learn which is great; I'm able to buy new clothes and pay for my driving lessons."

"I'm learning so much and for anyone interested in a career in construction, I'd definitely recommend an apprenticeship."

Right now, Jaydee is working on road and sewer works on our Lichfield site, he's also studying NVQ Level 2 in Construction Operative at Telford College .

We were only too happy to lend a hand when the branch of Sense Kidderminster , a charity helping people who have vision and hearing loss, had a broken window.

Our team on site nearby at Worcester Street jumped into action to replace the glass using specialist equipment.

Weโ€™re pleased the volunteers are happy with the result. ๐Ÿ’ซ
