💙Tina Buchanan has worked at Barclay Gardens for 20 years!

🌸Jo the activity coordinator interviewed Tina about her role within the home.

🏡Tina began by telling me about her role as a senior and what her responsibilities entail.

“My role is to look after the residents and staff team who take care of the residents this a includes, care staff, catering staff, support workers, activity coordinator and maintenance. This is to ensure the smooth running of the home on a day-to-day basis. Some of my role is about carrying out audits, completing doctor and district nurse rounds. It is about actioning these things and then taking time to report and record them so that we can work cohesively as a team”

🎗️I then asked Tina how she leads and supports care staff?

“One of the first tasks of the day is to receive a handover and from this I can make the informed choice about which staff member to put on which unit and with who. This takes into consideration what skills and knowledge each staff member has and how they work together and as part of the larger team. After this I do a walk around the home. This is so I can check how everyone is and ensure that I am available and around to help as required.”

🧑‍🧒What does good leadership in care mean to you?

“I like to lead by example. I wouldn’t ask any of the staff to carry out a task that I wouldn’t do myself. I also like to think about my approachability and being fair to all staff.”

🛁How do you ensure residents receive consistent, high-quality care?

“Although some of my tasks are office based with reporting and recording, I still like to go around the building and offer support and assistance to the residents and the team. I like that we have trusted staff whom I know I can approach to complete a task and requests and that this will be done. We also have great systems in place for checking things and issuing actions as soon as possible.”

🏋️Can you share a challenging moment and how you supported the team?

“We had a resident who began having some mental health issues. This resident became quite volatile and aggressive. Displaying behaviors towards both staff and residents. Once alerted to the situation I went onto the unit to help with de-escalation and to support both residents and staff and help to residents and help to resolve the situation”

💪🏻What makes this home a strong, supportive workplace?

“Barclay Gardens is residents’ home however, we all respect that it is our workplace. It is supportive because as a company coverage care gives us access to great regular and updated training. We follow procedures such as personal development plans which enable staff to come forward talk to their line manager about issues. On top of this we all have an ‘open door policy’ meaning that staff do not have to wait for these meetings they can gain help and support anytime.”

👏Finally, Tina what makes you proud to be part of this team?

“We have a great team and we work well together. We have a strong office team and strong staff all working together with a varied skill set. We are a good team, and we look after our residents with the care and compassion we would like ourselves and our own family to receive.”

Yesterday our residents enjoyed a lovely hands-on activity making cookie cutter bird feeders 🐦💚

More than just a creative afternoon, this activity supported so many important needs.

Residents engaged socially, chatting, laughing and sharing memories as they worked together, helping to reduce loneliness and build meaningful connections 🤝💬

The different textures of seeds, the feel of the cutters, and the smells involved provided rich sensory stimulation, which is especially beneficial for wellbeing and cognitive engagement 🌾✨

Following the steps of the activity helped with fine motor skills, coordination and concentration, while the sense of achievement boosted confidence and self-esteem 💪😊

Spending time talking about birds and nature also encouraged reminiscence and emotional connection, and knowing the feeders will help local wildlife gave residents a real sense of purpose and contribution 🌍❤️

A simple activity with such a big impact — nurturing mind, body and soul 💫

💅 A Little Pampering Goes a Long Way 💅

Today we enjoyed a lovely manicure and hand-massage session here at the care home — complete with nail painting, gentle hand massages, and plenty of smiles 😊

Moments like these aren’t just about looking nice; they’re about relaxation, dignity, and feeling cared for. The hand massage helped ease tension, while choosing colours and chatting together made it a truly special experience 💖

It’s always wonderful to see how something simple can bring comfort, confidence, and happiness to our residents’ day.

🎨 Mindful Colouring – A Moment of Calm & Creativity 🖍️

Mindful colouring is a wonderful activity for our residents, offering a chance to slow down, relax, and enjoy the present moment. Whether it’s choosing colours, filling in patterns, or chatting together at the table, this simple activity can have a powerful impact on wellbeing. 💛

Colouring helps reduce anxiety, supports focus and concentration, and encourages gentle hand movement, which is great for maintaining fine motor skills. For many residents, it also sparks creativity, memories, and a sense of achievement when their artwork is complete. 🌈

Most importantly, it creates a calm, social space where residents can express themselves and enjoy meaningful moments together.
Sometimes, it’s the simplest activities that bring the greatest joy. 💙

✨Namaste Session Moments✨

Today’s namaste session was pure bliss 💜

I gently massaged a resident’s hands, arms, and head using clary sage and lavender oils, while lavender oil softly diffused through the room.

The therapeutic light created a beautiful aurora effect, and calming spa music set the tone for deep relaxation 🌌🎶

After the session, we enjoyed a cappuccino and a lovely chat ☕💬

Her words at the end truly touched my heart:
“I feel like you’ve taken me somewhere else.”

These moments are a reminder of how powerful touch, scent, light, and presence can be 💫
So grateful to create experiences that nurture calm, connection, and wellbeing 💜🙏

Our Barclay Family-
Thank you all for making this one of our best years yet.
Together, we have achieved something truly special. Becoming an award-winning team is an incredible milestone, but even more meaningful is the strong, supportive community we have built along the way. That sense of connection, trust, and care is felt every day—and it exists because of you.
Your dedication, compassion, and teamwork are the heart of everything we do. Each contribution, big or small, has helped create an environment where people feel valued, supported, and proud to belong. This success is entirely down to the commitment of our staff and the strength of our village.
We are deeply grateful for all that you do and for the care you give so generously. Thank you for an exceptional year and for everything you continue to bring to our home.
Happy New Year to you all.
Love Debbie&Emma
