Create Calm…..what’s all this about??? 🤔

As many know, I used to run a successful youth club in Lincoln, but as we’ve now moved Devon, I’m itching to get back to volunteering.

As my further training is in mental health and wellbeing, I’ll be combining this with my skills as a youth worker and, with the help of a fabulous group of volunteers, will be setting up Create Calm, a not for profit which focuses on providing creative activities, and coffee, cakes and chats about all things wellbeing. We had already been hosting creative, wellbeing activities at events as part of my business KyAnn Wellbeing, but felt like this needed more focus and clearer objectives, so Create Calm was created. 😊

Thank you so much for liking and following our page and we look forward to sharing this exciting chapter with you all! 🫶

Much love

Paula ❤️

Homemade Play Dough Activity! 🤩

Homemade play dough is an easy, cheap and fun alternative to shop bought play dough, and in addition to the hours of fun it provides, it also offers a range of benefits for emotional and developmental wellbeing. It provides a calming, sensory activity that can help reduce stress and anxiety while promoting fine motor skills, creativity, and imaginative play. The tactile experience of molding and shaping play dough can also support emotional expression, especially in those who may struggle to vocalise their feelings, as they can build and shape things to represent their thoughts, feelings and experiences; which can help open up conversations and allow them to get the support they need.

You can make your own play dough at home by simply mixing 1 cup of flour and half a cup of salt together and adding water, bit by bit, with a sq**rt of poster paint. Knead until it’s one solid colour, adding more water if it’s too dry or more salt and flour if it’s too tacky. After you’ve finished playing with it, it’ll keep when wrapped in cling film and kept in the fridge, making a fantastic sensory and calming activity to do at home.

Memory Bracelet Activity- Bereavement Support! ❤️

Make your own memory bracelet to honor and remember someone you loved deeply, who has passed away. Simply choose 9 different coloured pieces of string or wool that remind you of different memories, thoughts, or things about the person who has died. This could be anything from a special place you visited together, to the colour of their hair. Tie the strings in a knot at one end and then divide them into 3 groups. Plait them together and then tie off the remaining end. Each string woven into your bracelet now represents a shared moment, a word of encouragement, or a special memory that lives on in you.

Creating your own memory bracelet can help you to reflect on all the ways your special person touched your life and how they made you feeling when they were with you. Wearing it can bring comfort and help you feel connected to them; because even though they are no longer here, they live on in your heart.

This simple act of remembrance supports the emotional wellbeing of those who have been bereaved, by giving them a way to process their grief, celebrate their special person’s life, and carry their memories forward with love and hope.

Painted Stones Activity! 🦈🐞🍦🌳🐸🐦‍⬛

We used posca pens but you can used any acrylic paint/pens! A few people opted to varnish their stones to give them an extra glossy shine and added protection for the elements.

Painting stones offers a simple yet effective way to support your mental health and wellbeing. The creative process promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and encourages mindfulness by focusing attention on the present moment. It allows for personal expression, fostering a sense of accomplishment and can be used as memory or tribute activity. Additionally, the tactile experience of handling and decorating natural stones can have a grounding effect, enhancing feelings of calm and connection to nature.

Make Your Own Worry Doll Activity!🪆

This one is made using a dolly peg and pipe cleaners for its body, a button for its face, a feather for its hair, and felt and fabric for its clothes; but you can make yours using any random crafts you have, whether similar to ours or it’s created using alternatives such as wool, ribbon, pom poms, googly eyes or paper or card!

Taking inspiration for the Guatemalan worry dolls, make your own worry doll and practise talking to it about your difficulties and struggles!

Make Your Own Stress Balls Activity! 😩😌

Stress balls offer a simple yet effective way to relieve tension, improve focus, and promote relaxation. By engaging the muscles in the hand and wrist, stress balls help improve muscle strength; however, they also provide a calming, sensory experience and work as a mindful and relaxation tool to manage difficult emotions. Using a stress ball helps to release built-up tension, grounds the mind during moments of anxiety or overwhelm, and helps to create a sense of control in stressful situations.

You can make your own stress balls by simply using a funnel to fill an empty balloon with rice or flour. Once tied, you can squeeze your stress ball whenever you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

We decorate our stress balls with monster stickers to represent our monster sized emotions which, I’m sure you’ll agree, looks rather effective. 👹

Inspirational Quote Hanging Activity! ❤️

This uplifting and creative activity is perfect for encouraging open conversations, offering emotional support, and boosting self-esteem.

Using a template in the shape of a star, heart, or any design the child loves, invite them to trace it onto colorful card and carefully cut it out. Together, explore inspiring quotes, either ones they relate to or ones they create themselves, and talk about how these words connect to their personal experiences.

Once they’ve chosen a quote, help them write it on their shape and decorate it in any way that feels meaningful to them. Finally, punch a hole at the top, add a ribbon, and tie it so it can be proudly hung up.

Encourage the child to revisit their personalised quote whenever they’re feeling low or in need of a self-esteem boost; it’s a gentle reminder of their inner strength and worth. ❤️
